How to Post Awesome FR Comments Without Learning to Code -- the FreeRepublic Posting Form Enhancer

Do you want to post a photo or meme or other graphic image in your comment but don't know how and don't want to learn HTML?

Do you want to make your comment more awesome with BOLD or Italics or underscore or strike-thru and don't want to deal with HTML tags?

Do you want to post a clickable link to a page but don't know how? How about numbered or bulleted lists, tables, indented quotations, etc.??

Here's all you need:

1. Firefox browser (free for Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.) (also Chrome/Edge/Safari)
2. Greasemonkey (a script manager for Firefox; TamperMonkey for Chrome/Edge/Safari)
3. The FR Posting Form Enhancer script

Here's what you do:

1. Install Firefox if you don't already have it
2. Go to the Firefox "Extensions" page
3. Search for Greasemonkey, install it into Firefox
4. Get the FR Posting Form Enhancer script:
   https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/4726-fr-posting-form-enhancer

The next time you make a comment on a thread, you'll see something like this above the comment text box:

Posting an image is trivial, just click "Image" and add the image's website address.

CAVEAT: I've used this extension for years on Firefox, my main browser, using Greasemonkey. I have not tested it on the others (Chrome, Edge, Safari) using Tampermonkey but FWIW Google/AI claims that it should work. If I get a chance I'll experiment and add comments to this thread.

No argument - those tools can work well for those of us who are programmers and/or are comfortable with a separate full-featured HTML visual editor and copy/pasting between applications.

For folks who prefer to work entirely within the FreeRepublic comment page and just want to add some tweaks to their comment, the Form Enhancer is a much simpler option.

Another way to make nice posts is to use Word^TM, and then save that as a self-contained web page. Copy and paste that into a post.

I count 19 tabs on this extension. There’s probably more?

I suppose with time a user will just know what B I S Q or Table TR or all the other tabs mean and what they do.

But if the average FReeper can’t understand or use basic html, I doubt they can understand the download instructions and then follow through on a myriad of confusing tabs at the top of their screen.

I used to do all my own html coding but now I just ask Co Pilot to format it in old school Free Republic html for me. It does.

That's what the "Full instructions..." link in the OP is for. But besides that:

The most often asked posting question on FR is "How do I include an image in my comment?"

The second most often asked question is "How do I include a click-link in my comment?"

There's a button labeled "Image" and one labeled "Link". Those two buttons will take care of 90% or more of the FReepers who don't know HTML.

Your point about having to install and extension and script is valid, but I daresay that installing an editor, configuring it, etc. is just about as much work.

In any case, if you don't like the FR Posting Form Enhancer, that's your right. But you don't need to spend a lot of effort trashing it.

Instead, I suggest you write up your own post page about your favorite method. Ping me to it please, I'll be sure to comment, and if you like I'll ping the Windows Ping List for it.
