Unarmed Texas freshman, 18, is shot dead inside his car during routine traffic stop - as sheriff's deputy is fired

A sheriff's deputy has been fired after allegedly shooting an unarmed Texas freshman dead in his car.

Brazoria County deputy Kevin Tippit was sacked this week following an investigation into the death of John Mendoza Jr, 18, on June 1.

Protests erupted at Texas State University after it was claimed that Tippit fired at the student following a routine traffic stop near Lake Jackson, around 55 miles south of Houston.

Police said Tippit tried to pull Mendoza over when he left a park, but the freshman allegedly tried to flee the scene and led the deputy on a mile-long pursuit.

Mendoza's family dispute the claim he fled police, saying he drove slowly back to his father's nearby home, did not try to evade Tippit, and was shot with his hands in the air before the deputy gave him any instruction.

Mendoza was shot in the garage of his family home, and was pronounced dead when he was taken to hospital. The teenager was not armed, police said.

Following a two-week investigation into the shooting, Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman said he fired Tippit, condemning his actions in a scathing video statement.

'The authority that is entrusted to law enforcement officers is extraordinary, and with that authority comes a responsibility to exercise sound judgment, follow policy and uphold the standards that are expected by this profession,' he said.

That happened to me in 1976.

I was 18, in my last semester of high school. I had worked very late, past my shift time, and was coming home around 1:00 am on a Tuesday. I did see a state police car in an empty parking lot but thought nothing of it. I wasn’t speeding or driving sketchy.

Anyway, he followed me. I turned up my road, and right before I reach my house, he flips his lights on. So I pulled over along the side of the road across from my driveway.

He comes up to the window and asks me what I was doing out so late!

I told him I was at work. So he wants to know all the details and starts grilling me.

Meanwhile, my stepfather has come out and is listening to all this. He then shouts, “Hey, he was working late! AB, just pull up in the GD driveway and go to bed!”

So the cop goes back to his car, shuts of his lights, and drives off. I pull into the driveway while my Dad shakes his head and mutters about stupid cops.

Neither of us were shot that night, though. Which was good.

If the deputy was armed with a SIG, it's obviously the gun's fault...

Good story. I had similar experiences. Probably 50% of LE would be violent thugs if they didn’t get this job that allows them to be that way legally.

I’ve never understood the unquestioned love of all police. There are very good ones to be sure, but there are also a ton of vile scum. I had a friend whose policeman father was very corrupt. Eventually he was discovered, but not before leaving a trail of destruction.

I know of one incident in the 1980s where a teenage male set off a bomb in response to police pulling him over to harass him constantly.

It was rare, but not unknown. Also, the kid could have had earbuds in and didn’t hear a siren. It’s easy to not look in the rearview for a time.

True.

But overall, I don’t hate cops. I understand they have tough jobs, have to deal with the worst of the undesirables, and overall protect us, but...

As my Dad said, some are just dumb.

And when I’m driving? I treat cops like I’m a Wildebeest on the Savannah and they’re hungry lions. I avoid them, drive proper, and try to not make myself noticeable to them. Just an old man in a car.

So the cop was being fired so he shot the kid??

The headline does say “as sheriff’s deputy is fired”.

Most of what you say is true. Except for the part that the parents were asleep at the wheel. Parents can try as hard they can, and still can’t always compete with the peer pressure on children by other kids. Public schools, peer pressure and puberty all give parents a beatdown. I know this for a fact.

I don’t hate cops either. I’m just realistic about the potential of encounters with bad ones.

Another point - most police are simply paid mercenaries with guns. If Socialists take control, watch how quickly the police will enforce all sorts of bans, including gun bans.

Back in the day, even into the sixties if you ran from a cop you were likely to get shot. That was the Fleeing Felon rule. If you ran the felon status was assumed and the court would uphold it.

As in every police-involved shooting, it’s best to let the investigation play out. Obviously, a police officer is going to be on high alert when a vehicle refuses to stop and then pulls inside a garage. If you speak with police officers and prosecutors, they will tell you the same thing: If you put police (or anybody) in a high stress situation where they have to make split-second decisions, tragedies can happen. Just pull your vehicle over or perhaps drive to a well-lit area and put your hands out the window asap.

There is probably both dash cam and officer body cam video that would be available to show exactly what happened.

So yes, more info is definitely needed.

“Mendoza’s family dispute the claim he fled police, saying he drove slowly back to his father’s nearby home, did not try to evade Tippit, and was shot with his hands in the air before the deputy gave him any instruction.”

Maybe you have a reading comprehension problem? The article doesn’t even say it was a high speed chase. The kid drove slowly to his home. But go ahead and blame the dead kid if it makes you feel better.

“I’m no freshman in college, but if a cop were pulling me over, I’d put on my hazard lights and slowly drive to a safe place before stopping.”

There is no indication that there was no place to safely pull over. My guess is that he was either a snowflake who freaked out at the thought of getting a ticket and drove home to get help from his daddy. Or he was just a jerk who wanted to screw with the police. He FAFO.

He was armed. With a 5000 lb vehicle and the stop was a felony flee. And guessing by how ‘kids’ are addicted their phones the first thing he probably did was grab for the phone and lift it up to his head.

Release the dash cam footage

RIP kid...
.
We may find Out why This Happened
But
My vast experience with Police has taught ME NOW that I Want to Listen to Every Word the Cop says
Pulling over as Soon as I safely can
Keeping my hands on the Wheel then assuring The Officer Feels Safe.
.
Looks like they both made mistakes.

Could it be that he didn’t? Could it be that the cop that shot him was full of crap?

Listen, cop departments rarely EVER side against a cop, and in this case they summarily fired him. That alone should tell you a lot.

But of course, badge polishers and boot lickers gonna polish and lick.

Oh BS.

In my youth the local cops expected some kids to “flee” especially those with high performance cars. It was kind of a game. And the fines were serious but not financially crushing.
Nor were the police a bunch of trigger-happy shaven heads pretending to be military.

Times have changed and not for the better.

Is it any wonder that the quality of employees in various industries or areas, including the police, has deteriorated. Between the ‘defund the police’ leftists and the leftists mandating a dangerous vaccine for COVID to medical professionals, as well as the disaster of Obamacare, it’s a wonder that America has any decent medical staff or police officers remaining on the job. And that destruction has all been quite deliberate.
