A sheriff's deputy has been fired after allegedly shooting an unarmed Texas freshman dead in his car.
Brazoria County deputy Kevin Tippit was sacked this week following an investigation into the death of John Mendoza Jr, 18, on June 1.
Protests erupted at Texas State University after it was claimed that Tippit fired at the student following a routine traffic stop near Lake Jackson, around 55 miles south of Houston.
Police said Tippit tried to pull Mendoza over when he left a park, but the freshman allegedly tried to flee the scene and led the deputy on a mile-long pursuit.
Mendoza's family dispute the claim he fled police, saying he drove slowly back to his father's nearby home, did not try to evade Tippit, and was shot with his hands in the air before the deputy gave him any instruction.
Mendoza was shot in the garage of his family home, and was pronounced dead when he was taken to hospital. The teenager was not armed, police said.
Following a two-week investigation into the shooting, Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman said he fired Tippit, condemning his actions in a scathing video statement.
'The authority that is entrusted to law enforcement officers is extraordinary, and with that authority comes a responsibility to exercise sound judgment, follow policy and uphold the standards that are expected by this profession,' he said.

There’s nothing different with kids these days vs 50 yeqrs ago regarding police.
You’ve judged everyone in the story already after reading one version. I’ll wait for more info.
Why is it then I don’t remember stories like this when I was 18? I don’t remember kids I knew flipping out and running from police. Sure they got pulled over but they never turned it into an OJ parade.
There’s more to the story but unarmed because he didn’t have a gun? What was the officer being threatened with or was he hot after the chase and over did it? His trial might get some answers. Fired, yeah no 💩.
Oh I figure that.
My point being when I was this kids age I don’t remember kids running during a blue light special. This seems to be more of a recent thing.
We have more lower IQ kids these days
They can’t read. They cannot think for themselves. They’re on illegal or mind altering drugs or legal behaviour altering drugs. They believe life is a tiktok video. Their parents were asleep at the wheel when training them. Low real life experience. No objective reality or morality standards.
Low IQ or low respect? Also, cops these days are quick to the trigger. We are older now. Different times. I had a deer rifle in my 67 Fairlane my junior and senior years of high school, after school Gary and I would hit the woods along the rivers in NW Missouri. Never a problem, it never left the trunk of my car at school. Simpler times I’m afraid.
It’s very sad to read about a death that maybe could have been avoided somehow.
Some how my ass. Parenting and respect for the law. You meet a bear or a mountain lion don’t run. It still may end badly but you invite it if you look like prey or guilty. IMO
Grand Jury hearing. Someday the video will be released.
If it’s true that the kid fled the scene when the cop pulled him over, then it wasn’t a “routine traffic stop” as advertised in the clickbait title.
My great grandfather served in the Texas militia in the 1860’s, then moved to Tennessee for awhile raised grandad in Arkansas. Who settled down in NW Missouri where dad and mom raised me. I dodged Vietnam by going to USN submarines. Now and for 45 years I live in Idaho. I don’t have to deal with blue state bull💩. It’s just a shame how things are today. I blame it on the parents. Raise your damn kids right. IMO
“Raise your damn kids right. IMO”
Sorry that’s not directed at you. I should have said
Ya’ll first.
we are running really low on critical thinkers
i blame the skrools
I’ve been at a couple parties where please recalled and people ran out the door and all over the place escaping them. These were high school parties so unless you were a hermit, this has been done for generations.
police were called
Because at your age, all news such as this was local, and you certainly didn't have computers or the internet.
what was going on at the park where the 18 yr old left from?
what gave the sheriff’s deputy the inclination to even stop the car?
why would a driver try to flee, instead of stopping?
did they know each other prior?
deputy was fired, not just put on leave?
Even if he was running, they know where he lives. It can be an added charge.
I gotta call at work one night (night shift) my wife said our son was arrested at a party. Him and a friend were near a gas station by their high school. His friends said there was a party and they should stop by. So they did. It was a emtpy house up for sale. These kids were partying in an empty house. Beer was involved. The neighbors called the cops. My boy and his friend had just got there when the cops arrived. Everyone ran except my son and friend and a few others. Everyone they caught were arrested. Everyone was given a breathe test. My son and friend were negative (they just got there before the cops🙄) but he still went to court and the judge made him go to alcohol awareness class with a parent. Guess who that was. They searched and caught kids trying to hide in hay fields. The cops never threatened anything but a PARENT had to come get you. I went to the class with my son. Guess who was more embarrassed. Wasn’t me. Mom had to go get him. Guess who was more pissed off. No guns, knives, or drugs. Just beer. There were girls too this was not an LGBQ yada yada yada issue and no one was nekkid. It was simpler times.
Point being. Wife got up went to the cop shop got our son while giving me the news at work. Then it was me and the boy. It worked out but dammit it takes responsible parents. We weren’t perfect but we were there.
