Archeologists Discover The Oldest Sunken City In The World [50:12]
YouTube ^ | May 31, 2026 | Odyssey - Ancient History Documentaries

Posted on 06/01/2026 7:29:59 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

Just off the southern coast of mainland Greece lies the oldest submerged city in the world. It thrived for 2,000 years during the time that saw the birth of western civilisation. In this documentary, an international team of experts use cutting-edge technology to prise age-old secrets from the complex of streets and stone buildings that lie less than five metres below the surface of the ocean. State-of-the-art CGI helps to raise the city from the seabed, revealing for the first time in 3,500 years how Pavlopetri would once have looked and operated.

If this placename rings a bell, it's because Pavlopetri's dog was born there.

Haha, I saw that image you posted and I thought “my gosh, that’s really well preserved…” And then I watched the video and realized it was a diver swimming in front of an artist’s conception… :)

Yeah…I felt a bit sheepish!

A new twist on likes of the epic of Gilgamesh, as this is too recent for that. So it would have to be subsidence that sank it, but 15m is a LOT. Santorini?

I can’t wait until they discover the SUV’s hidden inside this city and caused the sea level to rise.

Pozzuoli, Italy has had a ~3M uplift since 1982. It came in 2 stages, 1 during 1982-1984. Another during 2004-2005. Good thing it is not the other way around...

Pavlopetri was the famous Greek opera singer.

Who also invented the Pavlopetri dish, a dish best served cold...
