FIFA facing ‘significant’ World Cup problem as SoFi Stadium workers set for strike vote
The Athletic (NY Times sports section website) ^ | May 29, 2026 | Adam Crafton

The union which represents more than 2,000 workers at SoFi Stadium has broken off negotiations with the stadium operators and plans to hold a strike vote next week ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

UNITE HERE Local 11 represents workers at the venue who largely work in food and beverage concessions, including cooks, servers and bartenders.

The group’s preparedness to call a strike vote was first reported by The Athletic in early April. The potential strike action threatens to impact eight World Cup matches at the venue, which is the home of the NFL’s two Los Angeles teams, the Chargers and the Rams. SoFi will host the opening World Cup match in the United States, when the USMNT plays Paraguay on June 12.

The previous bargaining agreement between the union and the stadium’s operator, Legends Global, has expired. Multiple bargaining sessions, held at the venue, have now failed to reach agreements, leaving FIFA at ongoing risk of a strike. In an interview with The Athletic, the union’s co-President Kurt Petersen said they broke off negotiations with Legends on Tuesday lunchtime.

“We felt the company (Legends) were not taking the concerns and demands seriously enough,” Petersen said. “At midday (Tuesday), the workers told the company that we intend to proceed with a strike vote. The vote is scheduled for next week over two days on Thursday and Friday.”

The left hates Trump so much that they will do anything to damage any success that might have the remotest connection to him. He has bragged so much about getting the World Cup for the USA that the left hates him all the more. This, even though he did not think he would be president when the World Cup occurred. He got it for the USA, not for himself.

I'm no FIFA fan, but this sounds like something akin to extortion to me.

Stan Kroenke, who married into the Walton family fortune (Walmart) knows how to deal with unions, I am sure.

Sheesh. NY and NJ are playing truly grotesque gouge the tourist games and now the SoFi Stadium is getting skunky.

Just move the venues, already.

Get out of Cali and the NY/NJ area. Just to be safe, stay out of all blue cesspits because they are union infested and run by a looter political class.

There are plenty of smaller cities with big college football stadiums and enough hotel capacity to handle a football sized crowd. And when you look at the people who will actually be attending the games, that’s all it is.

The hookers and drug dealers would be inconvenienced but they will find a way.

The FIFA bigwigs, TV execs and the assorted celebrities chasing photo ops and social media followers want to party in Sodom and Gomorrah, but actual soccer fans won’t mind the switch. A lot of them are in and out for two games, probably on the same day. At the prices FIFA is charging, that’s already a hit. Some may have built a U.S. vacation around their soccer games, but they can easily adjust that.

I’ve always suspected that some union strikes are initiated by Democrat politicians for political purposes. Especially this one. It would eliminate the national embarrassment of holding the World Cup in LA’s cesspool.

Take it to Texas or Florida. And play the entire US part in those states or state. I’m sure a couple of red states would be more than willing to support the US needs during the competition. There is a lot of money that flows out of these types of tournaments. If California and Washington state don’t want it, I’m almost positive Florida and Texas does. And they have the facilities to get it done. Get the contracts done there and make sure the signees understand the contract is not inside strike possibilities without the one that does having to pay for their part of the cost plus court costs.

I find it interesting that the unions are not suing the event. They are suing their contracted employer who signed with the stadium contractor.

To make it further, there is a contract signed with a contract signed, If it doesn’t happen, the taxpayers in LA will be out millions of dollars. Hope they can afford it.

Excellent ideas! Cities with big time football, baseball, basketball and hockey will not get as enthusiastic about something like the FIFA World Cup, as would a smaller city. There are enormous college football stadiums which are almost never used. The prices for the tickets in New Jersey are ridiculous.
