NYC ‘super speeders’ will now be forced to install speed-limiting devices in their cars

The city’s s worst “super speeders” will be forced to install speed-limiting devices on their cars, under a new state law passed Tuesday.

The measure, approved as part of the state’s budget, will require drivers with 16 or more speed camera violations in a year to install a speed-limiting device that uses GPS technology to keep drivers from going faster than posted speed limits.

The new law is set to take effect about one year from the date Gov. Kathy Hochul signs the budget — and will apply only to violations that occur after that.

“New York is putting these super speeders on notice,” Hochul said at a press conference earlier this month. “You’ll not flout our laws, and you’ll not endanger children, pedestrians and other drivers who deserve to feel safe.”

The law builds on the city’s existing school zone camera program.

Cameras can be used only within a quarter‑mile of a school under state law, and in the Big Apple school zone cameras operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Registered owners receive a $50 ticket in the mail when their vehicle is recorded traveling more than 10 miles-per-hour above the posted limit in one of the city’s 750 school camera zones.

The new law targets a small group of drivers — around 14,600 cars continue to blow past the cameras despite repeated fines.

Super speeders are often behind the wheel of high‑end vehicles, according to a report by Transportation Alternatives that analyzed city speed camera data.

Not to worry...says 16 speeding tickets in a year before you have to get the “device”. If you have 16 speeding tickets, you shouldn’t have a license....

Although everyone references the much later movie Idiocracy, the classic SF story the Marching Morons by C.M. Kornbluth (April, 1951 issue of Galaxy) had the overbreeding low IQ people have to be protected in life. Their cars were limited to 25 mph but the speedometer showed up to 100 mph, letting them get excited they were really speeding.

I suppose they could install a spy device, but unlikely that it could do much else since I don’t have an obd port.

Perhaps I saw in a christmas movie starring some bruce guy that gps satellite signals are really weak and easily spoofed too.

State law says New York City can lower speed limits on streets within 1/4-mile of school. Counting both public and private schools, that’s 2/3 of city’s streets — including 87% of Manhattan streets, 82% of Brooklyn streets and 74% of those in The Bronx.

So, between 2/3 and 87% of the streets are allowed to have the speed limit reduced by NYC, 24/7.

I think I see the problem....

Mark Steyn has an exceptional reading of the short story in his "club". (He charges for them, but it is worth it if you like well done audiobooks)

Original text version of story available here. It is a good, short read, and has the feel of a Twilight Zone episode.

Kind of the opposite of Training Wheels for a bicycle.
Most habitual speeders have a big rebellious streak within them. They may see this as a challenge; how quickly can they disable any speed-limiting device w/o some faceless Monitor or software system knowing about it?

prison time...... for putting so many people at risk. Cars are as dangerous, or even more so than guns.

Consider the program already dead. Once the first illegal alien gets flagged, the city politicians and bureaucrats will abandon the system.

= = =

And they will install some 5-foot thick rubber rear bumpers for the faster traffic trying to run them off the road.
