Consumer sentiment has tumbled to a fresh record low in May as fears of higher prices grow due to the U.S.-Iran war and elevated oil prices, the University of Michigan’s Surveys of Consumers said Friday.
The index of consumer sentiment fell to 44.8 from a preliminary reading of 48.2. It’s also well below the 49.8 level seen at the end of April.
“Consumer sentiment fell for the third straight month as supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to boost gasoline prices. Sentiment is now just below the previous historical trough seen in June 2022,” Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu said in a statement. “Critically, consumers appear worried that inflation will increase and proliferate beyond fuel prices, even in the long run.”
Indeed, inflation expectations over the year ahead rose to 4.8% from 4.7% last month. That’s well above the 3.4% reading seen in February, before the war began.
Longer-term inflation is expected to rise 3.9%, up from a 3.5% reading in April.

Record low consumer sentiment.
30yr bond over 5.1%.
Oil hovering around $100.
Stock Markets hitting record highs.
It just does not add up.
Biden hit 9.1 in 2022. Overall Biden racked up a record 20 per cent inflation rate.during his 4 years,
“It just does not add up.”
Stocks trade on the future. The future looks great.
Stocks trade on the future. The future looks great.
I have to wear shades.
There is mucho oil still in the ground in Texas and the Dakotas…and plenty of oil in the Gulf. If there is an oil shortage, why are there not more drills in the ground.
It’d be great if Republicans could run against Biden.
This isn't about how much oil is in the ground or being drilled. It's about how much is in the production delivery pipeline and the time necessary to refine and distribute it.
Interrupt that supply chain and it takes more than a year to rebuild. As our stocks deplete holding up the rest of the world, that situation worsens considerably, starting somewhere between July and August this year. That does NOT bode well for November.
“The future looks great.”
It looked even better in March 2000.
Then the market dropped nearly 80% over the following year.
There’s a reason Berkshire Hathaway has $390 billion in short term treasuries.
And uppity nobodies who act like they know it all is always IGNORED. And should be. too bad for you.
Just wait cultist.
People get hungry and you’ll have to look around for your own safety when your out in public.
This is going to be amusing to watch.
I’m sure voting for Democrats will solve all those problems! People may temporarily put them back in power, but are going to be heavily disappointed when “affordability” gets even worse, and will take it out on them in subsequent elections. I can’t believe all the complaints about gas prices on this site. As if Democrats will lower gas prices with their climate change cult. Sheesh.
You’re right.
If Trump follows through with his threats to turn Iran into a parking lot, he’ll be branded a bloodthirsty warmonger.
If he throws up his hands, says “to hell with this mess” and leaves, it’s TACO.
And if he maintains the status quo it leaves many wondering if he really has a plan at all.
Personally, as a Trumpist I’d like to believe that he knows exactly what he’s doing, but with November drawing closer and prices surging at the pump and meat counter I’ll confess I’m beginning to wonder.
Thats the problem.
When an adminstration gets in and fails to follow through on its promises, the effects are felt and become so severe that the people will retaliate.
Watch..low thirties in approval. Independants are at a extreme high disapproval.
And when they turn to the other extreme-the socialist party, that alternative is even worse.
Just remember. This is self inflicted.
But the ballroom, the Arc de Trump...
Actually, in the past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed the price of beef dropping. But overall, my grocery bill is nearly double, a finding that started during Biden’s administration. With the price of diesel being so high, I don’t see it decreasing any time soon. Add to that the fact that here in Oklahoma, one grocery corporation has a near monopoly, it doesn’t look good. Their outrageous pricing gives Walmart a reason to boost their prices to just a few pennies less than theirs.
Obviously the GOP is going to roll in Nov….. remember chicken little….. its going to be OK👍🏻
Maybe if you left your house sometime and joined the real world you could share some anecdotes too.
History has proven that claim to be false.
As for giving up anything today, would Israel even surrender a grain of sand if Iran demanded it? Of course not. On principle, as a point of pride, as a matter of sovereignty, not one grain of sand.
Nor would Trump surrender anything. It's a matter of national pride, of winning.
You don't think other nations have pride? That they resent "demands" that impinge on their sovereignty?
Failed to follow through? Short memories…
Border secure
Illegals going out
Taxes cut
DEI eliminated
Military restructured
Draining swamp
And Im not sure how a 3 month “war” qualifies as a forever war…. So yea “no
forever wars” still in tact
Consumer sentiment is now even lower than during COVID or the Great Recession.
Normal, ordinary hard-working people with families are busted because gas, groceries, health insurance, homeowner's insurance, and the cost of living in general have all become unaffordable.
Hows that no more wars and nation building working for ya?
Hows the no more foreigners “Chinese” purchasing American farm land working?
Border secure? You sure about that? No more drugs coming across right? Go talk to the DEA along the northern border. Hows those new HB1 visas going? H
Military restructured? Ya right. The Ford had to return for what reason? Food rationing in the ranks deployed in the mid east. Mail deliveries suspended. How are the ship building contracts going?
Draining the swamp? Trump and his cabal are the swamp. Just like the rest.
Hows that 3 month war working out at the gas station? The grocery store?
Time for you boys to realize that neither extreme wing of either party are worth it.
