Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) doesn’t think 100 is too old to serve in Congress, as we reported last week.
Despite twice being duped by Russian comedians and regularly making little sense, the 87-year-old is hitting the campaign trial once again this year to seek a 19th term, which would have her serving 38 years in office.
And she’s not alone, as other members of Congress are showing advanced signs of senility and, in some cases, dementia — but remain determined to stay the course.
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.)
Florida Democrat Frederica Wilson, 83, has had a month-long, unexplained absence from Capitol Hill, where she has missed over 43 votes since mid-April and has been a total no-show on all her legislative committee work.
Wilson, a sassy senior known for dressing in pink cowboy getup, has been making increasingly unhinged remarks like demanding “an uprising where people are taking to the streets” over immigration enforcement and calls for citizens to phone Republican lawmakers with threats.
During her absence, Wilson’s social media accounts have shared recycled photos from last year, without disclosure, presumably to trick folks into thinking the lawmaker is well and active.
Following mounting media pressure, the congresswoman released a statement blaming “eye surgery” for her prolonged absence.
“When you get 75, 80 years old, we know 50% of people show mild cognitive impairment. They may look fine reading off a teleprompter or repeating canned phrases, but behind the scenes, they’re having what’s called ‘white matter decline’ in their brain,” Dr. Russell Surasky, a neurologist in Great Neck, NY, told The Post.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC)
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.)
Rep. John Carter (R-Texas)
Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)
Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.)

It’s the finest retirement home in America!
I met WA State Senator Warren Magnusen in 1978 after he had had several strokes. He was pretty much mute, unable to use his hands, and shuttled about by staff who made sure his vote was recorded correctly.
Wilson is the black cowgirl isn’t she? :)
Maybe they should take tests of mental acuity.
I forgot a few things and my daughter hauled me off to local psychologist to take 6-hour memory test. Early morning appt. I go to bed late and get up late, so was there on 4 hours of sleep.
Print was small and I didn’t have glasses with me, nor did I eat breakfast.
Came out “high normal”. I’lll be 90 in a couple of weeks.
Given the same circumstances and test, idiots in Congress would in be hauled off to nursing homes “for their own protection”.
Yep.
The cowboy hat affectation is just part of her clown suit.
Much higher percentage than the general population.
We are the Soviet Union.
Congress, the executive, the courts.
The entire thing has turned into a dreadful farce — made worse by widespread corruption and even out and out treason.
The booze and the corrupt souls will do that.
The saddest case I ever saw was Claiborne Pell. I had no use for his politics, but he was a lovely old school gentleman. In his last couple of years, he ambled around the Capitol, guided step by step by staff, always speaking graciously and with impeccable courtesy even when one wondered if he had the slightest idea who he was talking to. He also talked a lot about his encounters with aliens.
I was too young and too junior to seriously inquire, and I still have no idea why the people who might have intervened allowed it to continue. His staff, of course, was punch drunk on getting to play Senator. The leadership on both sides of the aisle should have intervened, as should have the governor and top politicos in Rhode Island.
It is one of the hard duties of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to have The Talk with failing Associate Justices. I don’t know if any Justice has ever put up a fight at that point. I imagine it can be as bad as taking the car keys away from an aging parent or grandparent who doesn’t want to lose their mobility.
One of the things that happens to these folks is that they outlive everyone back home, including their families and all their friends. If they stay in office, they are treated as if they’re important. If they retire, there is nothing to go home to and they’re too old to enjoy anything if they did. They would be sent to a nursing home, put in a rocking chair, and left to die.
Thanks.
Ironically, I had recently been hauled off to hospital and nursing home when I had a serious case of Vertigo, which I’d never heard of before. Great hospital with XLNT food and wonderful Repub roommate. We had fun even though they wouldn’t let me out of bed for anything without help.
Transferred to nursing home and really had fun there. Excellent physical therapy team had me walking up and down many flights of steps several times a day. Couldn’t go home until they were satisfied that I could do steps at home.
Physical therapists can’t fix brains though. Nothing can fix stupid.
Exactly.
You’re dong GREAT Veto! My wife has occasional vertigo, her sister has it more often. My friend also has it once in awhile. Me? Thankfully no vertigo, but I did have a brain tumor removed seven years ago. I’m happy to be alive. I just turned 76 a couple of weeks ago.
Congrats on recent birthday. 76 is a great time of life. Have all the fun you can, I really believe it adds years to your life. And exercise does for sure, even just a walk around the block.
My friend who is very overweight said she goes to a big supermarket, gets a small cart, and slowly walks up and down the aisles for 30 minutes or more. Even buys a few things. I’m underweight, have to remember to eat.
I bought several bottles of Meclizine at Amazon,. no prescription needed. Really helps to control vertigo. They gave it to me in nusing home and a brought a bottle home. Chewable tabs if you feel dizziness coming on. Or just take one or two with water to prevent that.
OMG, Daisy jumped on desk, is sitting on MiniMac, time for cat food and maybe something for me, I’m NEVER hungry.
I fell on my stairs and got my 4th concussion in a few years. A few weeks ago, whileI was sleeping, I rolled over on my side and got a terrible case of vertigo that was so violent it woke me up. I still get a few dizzy/light headed bouts every day.
*Congress critter Kay Granger disappeared from DC and a reporter found her months later at a memory care facility in Fort Worth (Texas y’all).
**They would be sent to a nursing home, put in a rocking chair, and left to die.**
They should be given ecstasy. They could enjoy their time outs.
I want to say William O. Douglas did....OTOH, he was only 77.
I know the Chief Justice had to sit him down and lower the boom. I don’t think I’ve ever read how that conversation went.
