With current events stirring up global energy prices, corn ethanol is again being dressed up as if it is a domestic energy source and agent of energy security. The truth is that corn ethanol is an energy sump, and that it takes more fossil fuel energy to make a gallon of corn ethanol than a gallon of gasoline. It is time to face this unpleasant truth and the other perverse outcomes achieved by twenty years of misguided policy.
In 2005 and 2007, Congress passed the Energy Policy and Energy Independence and Security Acts that together created the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program. RFS had three stated objectives: to improve U.S. energy security, to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and to support rural economies and agricultural development. Instead, RFS has increased motor fuel prices, increased food prices, put millions of carbon-sequestering acres of land into intensive cultivation, increased GHG emissions and air pollution, and increased water consumption and pollution. As to energy security, the gallons of U.S. gasoline displaced by federal ethanol blending mandates are being exported to Mexico and other nations. The great success of RFS has been the hand of government transferring wealth from motorists to big ag corporations. It's past time to stop the economic and chemical absurdity of forcing food to be fuel.

NEVER use one of the worlds best sources of food (and caloric energy) to power vehicles. Period. Not to mention, it takes like 100 gallons of water to produce one gallon of Ethanol
100 gallons of water to make one gallon of ethanol.
It takes one gallon of water to take the ethanol out of five gallons of gasoline
Plus you put more energy into the entire cycle (growing, fertilizing, harvesting, drying, transporting, processing crops) than you get out at the end. Far more.
But it makes liberals FEEL so good and that’s all that matters.
Not to mention, it takes like 100 gallons of water to produce one gallon of Ethanol

Both biofuels and petroleum are renewable resources. They are both carbon based biofuels, technically. The only different (and it’s a big one) is that it takes tens of thousands to millions of years for the earth to convert life/hydrocarbons into coal, crude, and natural gas. With biofuels, we still have to expend energy to convert to energy, whereas with “fossil fuels” the energy is created by time and pressure.
Ethanol should cost more than pure gas. The Administrative State makes sure it costs less.
Once you got farmers on the government dole it makes it makes it harder to get rid of these stupid entitlements. The people who are hurt by them are many with little pain. The people who profit from them lose much more. Elon Musk rightly concluded that if he went after all the money going into things like this they would probably murder him. The looters don’t like anybody trying to derail their gravey train.
Too late. How we gonna win Iowa by taking away the subsidies? Trump stood up for it when campaigning but the truth is it should be discontinued over a 5 year period. Who’s gonna tell them that? Wait until 2029. Grassley’s replaced and their other(hot/elected)senator squeals against it for cover. It’s a game my friends.
We are a net exporter of oil why aren’t we drilling cracking and using it instead of defending European needs.
And the fertilizer needed to grow corn comes from - natural gas and oil!
I have mixed feeling about this. We need farmers to stay in business.
It’s pretty retarded. Basically a lab stunt. It works, but it eats engine parts, makes less power per gallon, and you have to burn ac tremendous amount of diesel to grow the crops you make it from
We need their food . That market is guaranteed. The competition is pretty brutal but this is why American farmers are the most productive farmers in the world. They have to be to stay in business. Messing with the marketplace with Government tinkering only ensures the natural efficiencies of the marketplace gets messed up.
The farmers with the most pull get rich while the ones who simply do the better job lose.
It was a good plan when corn was cheap and coming out of our ears. But things change........................
Fertilizer crisis? Growing costs for food? Ending the Ethanol fraud would be one really good way to reduce this cost and risk. If we did that it might reduce the cost of feeding cows.
I have a small farm, don’t make a living from it, good thing. My FIL was a serious farmer, nearly 2,000 acres, did well at it but I never knew him to borrow much money or take a single federal payment. His biggest tractor was 120 hp and only 10 row equipment, no cabs and lots of hours, very little help. He managed. That said, I have almost no sympathy for farmers who cry about their cost, how hard they work, whatever. This is one of the most protected and subsidized small groups in the country. They claim to be conservative but they are not bashful about credit and handouts from the taxpayer. Then there is corporate farming and agribusiness, another parasite with political clout.
The lists of Agriculture subsidy and emergency or disaster relief recipients is disgusting. I have never applied for any and never will but legions of farmers / ranchers, so called and legitimate, have their hand out even when it appears they don’t need to. No amount is too small to grab and none are too big to be shameful of. I know one fellow who has leveraged and financed a considerable multi-state land holding just on the back of an initial crop set-aside package. It seems common.
How many farmers are there compared to those not making BIG BUCKS from the scam?
I was under the assumption, now false of course, that DJT was for America First, and what is best for My people. I would say OUR people, but President Trump is a charlatan on the level of Clinton, Obama and Biden. He got elected, it is now the selling of America to enrich the richest among the world.
He is actually on par with Bill Gates, we’ll own nothing but will be happy, else the Data center spy systems will “change our minds”.
Hundreds of thousands of acres of milkweed bearing fields were turned into cornfields to feed the Ethanol scam sold by environmental lunatics like Al Gore.
That has resulted in a massive decrease in the population of the Monarch butterflies who rely on milkweed for their migration journey.
Thanks Al... Killing butterflies to make a few cheap bucks.
Trump was against it before he was for it. Used it to buy votes across the corn belt. So we are stuck with this expensive and disastrous idiotic scam.
Then when the vote during the caucus they know who brings the pork.
I found a gas station that sells 100% gasoline - no ethanol - and use it in my small engines. Ethanol corrodes the rubber parts of carburetors.
