Astronomy Picture of the Day - NGC 1300: Barred Spiral Galaxy
NASA ^ | 17 May, 2026 | Image Credit: NASA ESA, Hubble Heritage

Explanation: Across the center of this spiral galaxy is a bar. And at the center of this bar is smaller spiral. And at the center of that spiral is a supermassive black hole. This all happens in the big, beautiful, barred spiral galaxy cataloged as NGC 1300, a galaxy that lies some 70 million light-years away toward the constellation of the river Eridanus. This Hubble Space Telescope composite view of the gorgeous island universe is one of the most detailed Hubble images ever made of a complete galaxy. NGC 1300 spans over 100,000 light-years and the Hubble image reveals striking details of the galaxy's dominant central bar and majestic spiral arms. How the giant bar formed, how it remains, and how it affects star formation remains an active topic of research.

A Space Whale eating the last two legs of a Blue Space Octopus.

Or a cheeseburger with two Blue Crab legs.

My swag is it’s two different galaxies that have merged at right angles to each other. The spiral arms are one galaxy and the ‘bar’ is the other. They will eventually become one huge galaxy where gravity has taken the smaller of the two into its full control............

I wonder how many nice, human habitable planets are in it? To think about it is amazing!

Where I live we have a regular program: HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS.

The people on the show are all astrophysicists...brainiacs.

It's a good show even though I understand only SOME of it.
They share/surmise on how our world and universe will end.

I understand more after seening the same show two or three times. :o(

I don't worry since they give our existence a long time from now.

Since there are estimated to be some TWO TRILLION galaxies...who knows.

I wonder why God made so many?
So Rosie O'Donnell will have some place for her progeny to live? Lol.

The astrophysicists think that there may be MANY more galaxies. Yikes.
Those same brainiacs say that there are very, VERY, very VERY few habitable planets to live on "out there." WE the the anomaly.
Whooda thunk?

It IS amazing!

John 14:2
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
