When it comes to storing food, many of us follow the practices our parents and grandparents used. Who cares about reading the package instructions when Grandma left her butter in the butter bell all day, every day, right?
So, maybe your butter's home is on the counter in a dish. Or if not on the counter at all times, perhaps you leave your butter sitting out overnight to soften before baking.
But, should you leave butter sitting out, unrefrigerated? And, if so, how long can it be on the counter before it becomes unsafe to eat? We asked the experts at Land O'Lakes to put the debate to rest once and for all—and some of you might not like the answer......
Even though room-temperature butter likely won't make you sick, Land O'Lakes recommends storing butter in the fridge when you're not using it. But, if you're in the heat of baking and forget to put the last little knob back in the fridge right away, that's ok—just so long as you don't let it sit out for a few extra hours.
"Do not leave butter at room temperature for more than 4 hours," says Engen. "Always return any unused butter to the refrigerator and be aware that butter left outside refrigeration may become darker in color and have [its] flavor affected."
Keeping butter in the fridge is a good rule of thumb, as it helps ensure the tasty fat won’t pick up any undesirable odors or flavors from your kitchen. Plus, the cool fridge temps make butter last much longer because room-temperature butter can go rancid within a day or two, according to the USDA, while refrigerated or frozen butter can last months.

Florida in summer is not a good location to leave dairy products on counters for long, even with a/c.
What would anyone expect a vendor with product liability risk to say but to keep it in the refrigerator? That is the safest most inconsequential answer they can possibly give.
We have kept butter, soft on the counter covered in a dishfor years and years. One stick usually lasts less than a week.
What they really want is for you to use four more slices on a piece of toast. That way you are sure to use a lot more butter. As for changing color and losing flavor, it never happens at our house. Butter never sits on the counter in a covered dishfor longer than about three days.
Made from pasteurized cream or raw?
Allegedly, butter originated with nomads, their goats and camels.
Before the days trek, the goats were milked and collected in leather skins attached to the camels.
As the ships of the desert made their way during the day, the milk of the goat was churned.
A new spread was thus added to mashed dates and honey.
“Meanwhile, people on the Oregon Trail churned their own. And the other thing they ROUTINELY did was buy and carry canned butter... on the Oregon trail, with no refrigeration.”
Yes, but how many of them died of dysentery or cholera?
The other thing they did is transport eggs in barrels of lard
My Granny had a block of real butter in the pantry with a towel over it all the time. You got the broom if you put it in the fridge after a meal. 😉
There’s a reason for that
Margarine is one of the original Franken foods
He also would eat French Fires from one Fast Food Restaurant but not another. I don’t remember which was which, Burger King, McDonald’s or Wendy’s............
wow lol...
I will admit whole heartedly!! I have always left butter out on the counter! I dont ever remember putting it in the fridge after its been takin out and the paper wrapper removed!!
When something lasts longer, you buy it less often. When you inadvertantly leave on the counter after breakfast and worry, land o Lakes says it’s no good after4 hours, it’s on the next day’s shopping list. Same with cams stamped with expiration date. Soda on the other hand no good after expiration.
LOL proved itself deeply Minnesota when it took the indian Maiden of the box post George Floyd. How in the world was that disrespectful to Indians?
“When you inadvertantly leave on the counter after breakfast and worry, land o Lakes says it’s no good after4 hours,”
Perhaps you should not make up what you say they say.
unless they changed the content of what I read several moths ago, that’s what they said, taste deteriorate s after 4 hours, sahll we do a search and paste on this artice? You first.
I cannot paste something that is not there.
Redeem your points for a suborbital, but choose your fellow passengers wisely.
“You first.”
You made the claim. You go.
I can still read “”Do not leave butter at room temperature for more than 4 hours,” says Engen. “Always return any unused butter to the refrigerator and be aware that butter left outside refrigeration may become darker in color and have [its] flavor affected. “ You may have to read through or have someone read it to you to make sure i didn’t make it up.
Nowhere does he say it is no good after four hours as you said.
He only said color and taste MAY be affected.
