The luxury MV Hondius cruise ship at the center of a deadly suspected hantavirus outbreak has been refused permission to dock in the West African island nation of Cape Verde, officials said Monday.
Roughly 150 people are currently trapped on the Dutch cruise liner off the African coast after three passengers died and others became seriously sick with symptoms.
The ship, which was on a weekslong polar cruise from Argentina to Antarctica, had requested help from local health authorities on Sunday following the latest death.
So far, no one has yet been allowed to disembark, the company operating the cruise said.
Authorities in Cape Verde, for their part, said they had not allowed the Dutch-flagged ship to dock as a precaution, citing the “aim of protecting national public health.”
Three people – a Dutch couple and a German national – have died in recent weeks following the suspected hantavirus outbreak.
Medics are now also working to try to evacuate at least two people with symptoms of the deadly virus.

All star casts are no guarantee of a good movie. “A Bridge Too Far” is a good example..........
Or “The Battle Of The Bulge”
Never saw that one...............
Ditto. I have no interest in seeing any African, Asian, or South American countries. Never been to Mexico, and I don’t care to go there either.
Consider yourself lucky.
First get rid of the rodents, then spray nests and known infestation areas with 10% bleach solution. When cleaning wear good bacterial masks or a particulate respirator.
” But conditions aboard the ship must be filthy with rodents and their feces for this to happen.”

“All star casts are no guarantee of a good movie.”
The disaster movies of the 1970s come to mind.
Following exposure, it may take 1 to 8 weeks for symptoms to occur.

(the hanta virus story/excuse was used in the X-Files movie, and in several episodes, to cover up the actions of the aliens)
...trapped...
There it is.
Hantavirus is what killed Gene Hackman’s wife, or so they say
I took a Viking cruise in the same area. I doubt they got sick from the boat.No cruise passenger is going to be down in the hold breathing in rat urine fumes. If it was spread by food, more people would be sick. I remember going on a cruise sponsored horse farm tour ( cannot remember what town it was in, but near Ushuaia) . I can easily imagine contracting something there, they had sheds and barns, etc. Two crew members also contracted it, so no way did they get it from a hotel that a passenger might have stayed at before the cruise. . I also remember on these ship excursions Viking brings crew members to help escort the passengers.
It’s not the ships it’s filthy people they hire
I will use that in my shed for bat residue...thx
The passengers are the people spreading illness. I remember on a couple of cruises I went on. The first was a woman who was coughing and hacking when she first arrived on the ship ( noticed it on the first cruise day). She was on a tour bus that I was on, and the passengers behind her, and me and my husband across from her all came down with covid. The other passengers reported their illness, and were quarantined. My husband got sick , and he stayed in his room while I got food for him.I didn’t let housekeeping come in our room. I got sick after we returned home. The second time on a cruise (when there was a respiratory virus going around), I saw a passenger sneeze into his hands and then touch the serving cutlery. My husband almost had to restrain me from telling this guy off. I reported it to the manager, and they had to sterilize the whole area. Next time, I will say something to someone who does that., and just not tell my husband.
How can anyone who is not seriously demented still cough into his hand? Kids have been learning in kindergarten for a very long time to cough into their elbow because their elbow is not going to touch anything. Some people are really clueless.
Biden is an example of this. Every time I saw him coughing into his hand I thought how demented he really was.
hantavirus is contracted by contacting infected rodent feces or urine or breathing dust from infected rodent feces ... sanitation must be atrocious on that boat ...
“testing showed HV antibodies indicating past exposure.”
wow, you’re double-lucky:
1. you didn’t die
2. you should have some level of future immunity
