According to retired CIA analyst Larry Johnson: During an emergency meeting On Saturday Trump tried to “use the nuclear codes” on Iran and he was stopped by General Dan Caine.
According to Johnson “there is seriously something wrong with Trump.”

"An order to nuke Iran without a declaration of war, or without any evidence that Iran was about to launch a nuclear attack of its own, would be an illegal order, and the military would refuse to carry it out.
In other words, if (and that's a BIG "if") the President were just ticked off about how Iran is bargaining, and decided to launch 20 nukes to wipe them out, that order almost certainly would be refused. As it should be.
Trump was in his presidential limousine and he had to wrest control of the wheel from his driver so he could speed back to the White House at 150+ MPH to get to that emergency meeting.

Obviously a decision to use a nuclear weapon would require all kinds of analysis of a target, and many other details about the device, yeild, timing etc.
It is not a “hold my beer and give me those codes” type of thing.
The only thing I could imagine is Trump might be willing to let Iran think he is considering it.
That is my understanding as well. The importance of the football is that no nuclear attack can be launched without the president authorizing it with his code.

Some envious military brass in the first Trump term included Milley, who promised his “counterpart in China” to alert him if Trump was making plans to attack China.

Right. But just because he orders it doesn't mean it is actually going to happen. That would be a terrifying thought. Suppose Senile Joe Biden woke up one morning and decided to nuke some other country. Should that order be obeyed just because he gave it? Of course not.
