A maniac reportedly attacked a US war plane with a hatchet at a major civilian airport in Ireland Saturday, causing extensive damage at a controversial stopover site for American military.

He snuck into restricted space at Shannon Airport in County Clare, where the US Air Force’s $75 million C130 Hercules military transport aircraft was parked, local outlet The Journal reported.

The lunatic — in his 40s but yet to be identified — climbed onto the wing of the plane and started hacking away at the wing and the fuselage, causing extensive damage, according to GB News.

The shocking attack caused the airport to close for just under 30 minutes, before police from the Garda Síochána arrested the man.

The C-130 Hercules is a transport aircraft that is used in a wide range of military situations.

We had to refuel our C-130 at Shannon one time. There was a ring of police officers that surrounded the entire airplane and all of us. We were not allowed to go beyond their encirclement. But what really got my attention was that they weren’t facing outward so as to protect us, they were facing inward as if we were the threat.

Old Irish aviation blessing.☘️

May the plane wing bow down to meet you☘️

Another site described him as a “distraught Irish man.”

“As yet unidentified.” Yeah, but they know who he is. Just another camel humping 34 IQ point mutt who wears a towel on his head. They’re in Ireland, too.

Military aircraft don't belong at civilian airports, except maybe for emergency landings and air shows. Especially now during a war.

Why don't they go to Mildenhall or Lakenheath, which are military bases and not all that far away?

The range of a C-130H without aerial refueling is 2,350 miles loaded and 4,500 miles in ferry mode, but the Air Force likely wants to avoid stripping it down for ferry flights to avoid all the effort and inspections to restore it to ready mode.

The straight line distance between Thule, Greenland and Shannon, Ireland is about 2,200 miles.
The straight line distance between Thule, Greenland and Mildenhall, UK is about 2,400 miles.
The straight line distance between Thule, Greenland and Lakenheath, UK is also about 2,400 miles.

In addition, Ireland is a neutral country which makes things a lot simpler than flying into other countries.

Well, that's gonna cost a pretty penny.

A pretty penny, and the career of the senior officer present who left a major asset unguarded in an unsecure location.

FWIW, Ireland was on the side of the Axis in WWII.

They were officially neutral, though many rooted for Germany over Britain.

Do we still have a base in Prestwick, Scotland? That would probably be closer to Thule than Shannon.

That would be near impossible since many airports also serve as home for Air National Guard bases. Do you want the government to have to purchase land and build runways strictly for the ANG?

Yes. And if they had done it correctly from the start, that land would have been far less expensive.
