California’s fraud problem is so bad the DOJ will ‘never have enough’ prosecutors to fight it
NY Post ^ | 4/03/26 | Ross O'Keefe

There’s so much fraud happening in California that Los Angeles’ top federal prosecutor believes he could “never have enough” prosecutors to tackle it all.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli spoke to The Post Friday about fraud in California — and how, despite his “unlimited hiring authority,” the Department of Justice is starving for new prosecutors aimed at the “almost unimaginable” amount of fraud in the state.

“We’re in a very target rich environment, and there is no shortage of leads for fraud investigations,” he said. “I would say we are doing a lot with what we have. We’re probably more productive than this office has been in years. However, our biggest limiting factor is having enough quality investigators and attorneys to work up and prosecute the cases.”

He described that the office is searching for “smart, capable and hungry prosecutors,” who aren’t just looking for a government paycheck. Essayli said they’ve resorted to looking at more junior lawyers who are one or two years out of law school to fill prosecutor positions, and would encourage them to apply.

Another problem lies within the specialized section dedicated to fraud in Essayli’s office.

Essayli said the major fraud section in his office is at roughly half-staff, because many employees left after President Donald Trump took office or took DOGE buyouts. If he filled out the section, he said, the office would be able to prosecute “at least double or triple” the fraud cases.

He accused Gov. Gavin Newsom of allowing fraud in the “hundreds of billions of dollars” in California earlier Friday.

“I call him the fraud king for a reason,” Essayli said of Newsom. “He has reigned over billions and billions of dollars of fraud…it’s going to be into the hundreds of billions...

The whole system is (necessarily) predicated on the government policing the government. That’s tricky.

I would — very seriously — like to see three things:

Death penalty for voting fraud. That’s a broad category and you can commit election fraud in multiple ways. I don’t care how you did it. The basic “right way” to vote is: One Man One Vote. If you manage to alter that simple equation, you should be executed. The whole point is to make everyone afraid to screw around with our elections.

Mandatory 20 years in jail for government fraud, with only one appeal allowed. And if you are guilty but rat someone out, then you only get 5 years. The whole point is to make everyone afraid to screw around with government money.

We need to find a way to remove bad judges. Current standards for impeachment are not helpful because it’s just too hard. I might suggest that activist judges (like Boasberg) who clearly try to cheat the system and make their decisions before the trial starts are engaged in a type of government fraud. That’s 20 years in jail.

Today, the people are afraid of their government. We need the government to be afraid of the people.

California spends at least 450 billion a year in social welfare spending of one form or another and some estimate go much higher.

At least 50% of California's social welfare spending is outright fraud or abuse by unqualified recipients.

So figure about 200 billion dollars a year entitlement fraud in California. California Democrat rep Ro Khanna has already openly acknowledged that almost 80 billion a year in fraud in California and that he wants to lead the charge on fighting fraud so that sets 80 billion a year as the hard bottom , low ball estimate for California's annual fraud budget.

It's completely unmanageable to prosecute the fraudsters and criminals - you have to go to the cash spigot and shut off the flow of cash to these fraud ridden programs. Then you have to have annual re application for eligibility

the insanity of paying government funded day care for illegal aliens and immigrants who are on welfare and not even working should be a clue we have lost our way when it comes to entitlements .

Why not just shut it all off and let them reapply? With strict guidelines of course.

This would not be happening if most of the Media were not ideological partners with the Democratic Party.

They believe it is their job to protect the Democrats and to attack President Trump and the Republicans.

Increasing Tech has made the old Media have real competition, and it is showing. Will it be enough to save the Republic? Only if we continue to do the best we can to help.

Pray for God to have mercy on the Republic, to grant wisdom and clear thinking to the Trump administration, and for the eyes of the people to be opened to the truth.

The media is a primary problem.

It seems to me that newspapers and legacy TV media (CNN, etc.) are mostly consumed by Baby Boomers. (Not really focused on bashing Baby Boomers here.) I don’t think Gen Z is reading the New York Times, or paying a lot of attention to what Don Lemon or James Carville say.

As the Baby Boomers die off, legacy media will fade more and more. Younger people get their information from alternative sources, and these alternative sources will be increasingly important. That’s going to help a lot, IMO.

The Trump Administration is already doing that , I think by executive order and a federal judge has slapped an injunction on it.

Part of the problem is that the law schools are infested with either liberal wokesters who think that fraud is how the downtrodden minorities avenge their oppression by the evil fascist tax-payers, or with shysters who go into law mostly looking for how they can subvert it to feather their own nests.

An army of prosecutors is not critical for stopping the fraud. The only thing necessary is the resolve to stop sending the fraudsters the money. A simple policy is that at the first indication of fraud of any kind, the money immediately stops.

“Any indication” includes painted windows, unanswered phone, fraud report, empty parking lot, untraceable name, etc., etc. Instead of sending money, the operation will simply get a notice that the money has been “temporarily stopped” and the operator munt call a phone number to get it restarted. The operator would then be required to send sufficient proof of a legitimate operation. Those who don’t do that will then be prosecuted. Lack of adequate proof of legitimacy will be proof of fraud.

Government employee unions like AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees) and SEIU (Service Employees International Union) need to be eliminated. Government workers should not be allowed to unionize.

You are absolutely on target with that kind of suggestion. It is the most cost-effective way to reduce government waste and do it quickly. This is also where AI can help to ferret out unusual circumstances to complement time-consuming investigations.

As much as we all want to see people committing fraud behind bars, by time they are prosecuted, the money is already gone and we then have to incur the continuing costs of litigation.

So, DOJ, how about getting off yer butts and jail a few? Force the rest to seek settlements — that cuts down the work load.

end all federal welfare, medicaid and medicare

Turn it over to the states. Let them tax their own citizens for “services” they want, and administer it locally.

blue-state welfare at it exists now, is based on Fed.gov creating massive amounts of money via unplayable debt, and distributing it through states’ corrupt, one-party politicized bureaucratic systems.
