Gavin Newsom is reflecting on the long-term grief he dealt with after witnessing his mother end her life through assisted death, also referred to as death with dignity.
Newsom was a 34-year-old rising politician at the time and told the outlet that he felt guilty that his busy schedule kept him distant as his mom suffered from the disease. But when the day arrived, he and his sister Hilary were by Tessa’s side.
“I hated her for it — to be there for the last breath — for years,” he said. “I want to say it was a beautiful experience. It was horrible.”
Newsom recalled giving Tessa painkillers to make her comfortable before the “courageous doctor” arrived. Tessa confirmed to the doctor that she was sure about her decision and the lethal medication was administered.
“Then I sat there with her for another 20 minutes after she was dead,” he said. “My head on her stomach, just crying, waiting for another breath.”
At the time of Tessa’s death, medical aid in dying was illegal in California. Despite the heartbreaking experience, he told the Post that witnessing that moment eventually strengthened his support for MAID being legalized nationwide.
“I watched the physical deterioration, the mental deterioration, just the cries of pain,” he said. “She would have just suffered.”
Newsom stressed that people should have “the freedom to make that decision themselves.”
California’s End of Life Options Act went into effect on June 9, 2016.
With MAID, terminally ill adults who are of sound mind and have been approved by at least two doctors can receive a prescription for a lethal medication. It is different from euthanasia because the patients themselves administer prescribed drugs to end their lives, rather than a doctor.
