I paid $107 fill up — and other horror stories from LA’s out-of-control gas crisis
NY Post ^ | 3/07/26 | Nina Joudeh

After Jill Gottlieb finished filling up her car at a Chevron station in downtown Los Angeles, the final tally on the gas pump read $107.

“This is crazy,” the social worker for the LA County Department of Health told The Post of the staggering amount she paid to top off her 2017 Mercedes. “I’ve never filled up my tank for this much before.”

As gas prices surge across the state, the Chevron station at 901 N. Alameda St. has become a stark symbol of the worsening pain at the pump plaguing Californians.

A regular gallon of unleaded gas at the station goes for an eye-popping $8.21—leading drivers forced to fill up there speeding away in disgust.

“This is f------ crazy. What is this?” asked Crystal, of Orange County, whose Toyota RAV4 was running on empty when she pulled in.

“This was the closest station I could find, so I had to stop. I ’m only filling up enough to get home,” added the 36-year-old, who pumped 3.7 gallons for $30.47 and snapped photos of the price to send to her family.

Two attendants at the Chevron station refused to answer questions about the sky-high prices, saying they signed a nondisclosure agreement.

Gas prices can vary widely depending on the brand, location and franchise owner, who set prices based on their own preference.

On Saturday, the average cost of a regular gallon of gas in the state hit $5.07 — 17 cents more than Friday and 43 cents more than a week earlier, according to the American Automobile Association.

Prices in the Golden State remain well above the US average of $3.41 a gallon.

Talk about cherry-picking to support your narrative! That station has reviews on GasBuddy over the last ten years that say the gas is $2 more than anywhere else in Los Angeles and that the staff is rude.

Reviewers are bewildered how it stays open, but apparently their strategy works. I wouldn't stop there.

What makes you think you and your gas-guzzling Mercedes are still welcome in Caliphate-fornia??

Shoot. In Texas, I’ve seen $100+ gas bills numerous times since the 1990s. Of course, that was in big pickup trucks with huge gas tanks but “ain’t nothing new”.

How does a social worker, a position that has always been lower pay in my part of the country, afford to drive a Mercedes?

The article doesn't give any details, but Mercedes has a few entry level vehicles that aren't out of range for people with OK income. Maybe a spouse is bringing home the bacon to buy a higher end one..

Three letters: “N” “G” “O”.

Pumped full of billionaire and taxpayers’ contributions.

2.89-3.49 here in Ohio

Side note, a friend in the oil industry said that from refinery to station takes approximately 90 days, so 100$ per barrel gasoline is 3 months away, immediate rise in gas prices is pure BS

I mean, it is really none of our business.

Prove it. They ran the two refineries out of the state, stopped pumping their own oil, and have the highest gas taxes in the country. Of course you blame the evil capitalist when it is exactly the opposite.

In the used car market, Mercedes are some of the cheapest cars available. Anybody can own one, but who would want to?

The M119 engine is reliable if it has been maintained.

If....

But yes, the cost of maintenance is the reason you can buy a used one for dimes on the dollar.

Chevron warns of economic collapse in California under Gavin Newsom in doomsday letter
https://nypost.com/2026/03/04/us-news/california-gas-prices-face-crippling-state-economy-chevron-president/

This has nothing to do with Iran, and everything to do with crippling taxation and over-regulation by Dem pols. Refineries in California are shutting down because of it.
