Free Buses, Real Costs. Inside Mamdani’s Socialist Dream to Shakeup Transit for New Yorkers
Fox News ^ | 2/14/26 | Nikolas Lanum

Posted on 02/14/2026 7:19:26 AM PST by Libloather

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has made "fast and free buses" a defining promise of his administration, framing the proposal as both an affordability measure and a long-overdue fix for a bus system that advocates say has been neglected for decades. But his big swing seems poised to collide with the political realities of New York City.

Supporters argue fare-free buses would reduce conflict, improve safety, and offer immediate relief to riders who depend on buses the most. Skeptics, including on-air pundits and transit organizations, warn the idea risks creating a major funding gap for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) unless the city commits to a durable revenue stream and a clear operational plan.

New York City bus riders already face some of the slowest service in the nation despite carrying millions of passengers each day.

"We’re the biggest ridership, and yet we’re subject to the slowest buses. It’s a fundamental unfairness. It’s an embarrassment," Danny Pearlstein, policy and communications director at the Riders Alliance, told Fox News Digital during a bus ride through the Bronx.

That history helps explain why Mamdani’s proposal has resonated politically. Pearlstein said bus riders, many of whom are students, seniors, and caregivers, are pressed for time and money just like drivers or subway commuters. Yet buses have long been deprioritized on New York City streets.

"That is why this administration’s call for fast and free buses resonates," he added.

Pearlstein's interview, among others, is part of Fox News Digital’s "The Rise of Socialism" series, which examines how socialist ideas and policies are increasingly shaping political debates and public policy in major cities across the United States.

Advocates point first to safety and reduced conflict. Multiple interviewees claimed that fare disputes are a persistent source of tension between riders and bus operators.

Free also means fighting anong the passengers trying crowd on the bus. You think people are gracious when it is free? Not on a bet.

Really should patent my amazing ideas.

Don't know if it is patentable. There is prior art of folks on the tops and sides of trains. Folks in India may challenge the patent.

After all, commies only pretend to pay people for their work.

And the people pretend to work.

I give it six weeks before he announces that the best way to have free buses is to scrap the s=fleet and go all electric. They only cost 2-4 times what a diesel bus does and have about 1/4 the lifespan, provided they don’t burn first.

The Brits never should have build the tunnel, or conquered far away lands. It is the same everywhere, even the US has done this and continues to do so.

Leave people alone, like we did prior to WW 1, and protect our large Island Nation. Every major conflict can be tied to previous major conflicts

We had a chance here on this Continent, to barricade against other nations. We blew it to take over the “Dream of Empire”. Watch tapes of Lindsay Graham. He practically gets off sexually at the thought of war and conquest.

The whole concept of “free buses” - or “free” anything - is a lie. The buses cost a lot of up-front money, and there are ongoing maintenance costs. The drivers are paid and support staff are paid. So, what is happening is that the cost of operating the bus system is being shifted from many who use the system to many who don’t use it. This is “justice”? Only for a psychopath like Mamdani.

Sir, did you create this?

If so, I not only salute you, I want to tell you we are wholly simpatico in this.

I even got choked up near the end reading Daniel Webster’s quote.

Well Done, FRiend. It reinforces that, even with the differences people have on this forum, I am among generally like minded people, and that comforts me.

Well Done.

NYC is a huge place.

It is generally necessary to use the subway to get around.

Sometimes I needed to get up and down Fifth Avenue, which lacks subway service.

Buses are mainly feeders to the subway system.

I’ve used buses to cross Central Park too.

One can use a bus to get to The Cloisters.

Let throw my 2¢’s in.

The usage of the word “ fast” in the phrase “fast

and free”

Making buses free does not change the arrival of

their collective destinations.

Its all pie in the sky Mamdani. Being elected

Mayor of NYC as your first REAL job &

the clear incompetence perhaps its time

for a RECALL

“disgusting bus hygiene”

When I worked for a major bus
manufacturer we would
occasionally take in a few
busses that had been in
service for refurbishing.
All of the techs and service
personnel were required to
wear hazmat gear.
Drivers’ of NYC’s coaches
we’re not allowed to leave
the bus unattended during
their 8 hour shifts, even
during their lunch breaks.
The most private area in the
bus, where one could relieve
themselves, was the rear stepwell
area. The hazmat teams would drill
drainage holes in the structures
of the stepwells to drain any urine
that accumulated before work to repair
the rear wheelchair lift could be
performed. The heater panels, which ran
full length of the bus down each side
under the seats were removed to expose
massive amounts of cockroaches sometimes
packed in so thick that they jammed up
the blower motors.
