People are getting an old-timey sailors’ disease on GLP-1s (Ozempic scurvy)

Time for Ozempic to walk the plank?

Top dietitians in Australia this week are waving a red flag about an unforeseen impact of the GLP-1 class of weight-loss drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

In a new systematic review of existing research, led by professor Clare Collins of the Newcastle School of Health Sciences in New South Wales, Australia, it appears that very few global trials of the drugs have taken into consideration what and how much patients are eating while using them.

This, experts have said, means many patients have been functionally malnourished — sometimes developing serious vitamin deficiencies like scurvy.

Part of what makes these drugs so effective for weight loss and diabetes management is their ability to suppress appetite. But not eating, or not eating enough of the right stuff, is simply not a sustainable path forward for anyone, regardless of whether or not they’re using a GLP-1. And dietitians are calling for more oversight.

“A reduction in body weight does not automatically mean the person is well-nourished or healthy,” Collins told the Australian Financial Review. “Nutrition plays a critical role in health and right now it’s largely missing from the evidence.”

One high-profile case of scurvy arose last year, when British pop singer Robbie Williams was diagnosed with what he called a “17th century pirate disease.” He had been open about his use of injectable weight loss medication for years, and has also spoken anecdotally about its potential connection to his degrading eyesight.

While scurvy — a vitamin C deficiency that can be deadly if untreated — posed a regular threat to sea-farers of yore, these days, it’s quite rare, especially in the US, UK and Australia, where nutrient-dense diets are common.

I know folks that take them. They are totally oblivious to any Box Warnings. One day, they will wake up sick. It’s crazy.

Why don’t these people just take a 0 calorie multivitamin pill?

Yea, one of my coworkers started that stuff. He had zero appetite and pretty much only drank a sports supplement from the gas station several times a day.
He mentioned today that he stopped using it a couple weeks ago. I wonder if he’s having some issues.

That was a great old movie. Bob Hope was so young looking and he delivered the line flawlessly. Thanks for the memory.

I am on Ozempic for my diabetes. I have no clue about weight watch, but it is a medication and anyone using it should realize that it is not magic.... with any meds you have to ask do the risks outweigh the benefits.

I believe the promise was less costly, not “freebies”.

They should only have enough to reduce 500-1,000 calories a day.

These people aren’t eating healthy food or supplements of any sort, or they take so much they haven’t eaten in a long while and somehow didn’t succumb to electrolyte imbalance, first.

Bizarre.

I find it revealing that some people (including a bunch here on FR) didn’t get their panties in a twist about Ozempic users when it was only used for diabetes. Once people started using it for weight loss, the fat cops came out of the woodwork and started talking crap about anyone using it.

I have been on Ozempic since shortly after it came out. For A1C control. It works, it has worked for years now, and I have had no ill effects from it.

Just gonna have to drink gin and tonics heavy on the lime to make up for their lack of important vitamins.

I was overweight at the age of 3. It runs in my family’s genes. My mother’s family were Rhenish merchants, who displayed their success by getting immensely fat. All the males on her weighed 350 and up as adults. My uncle (”Bones” Remmer—sarcastic) was the original mobster “whale.”

I began taking Mounjaro about 3 1/2 years ago. Since then I have lost 70 pounds. That kind of weight loss is common. I feel so much better in general on account of the weight loss, it’s unbelievable. I eat better (lots of fruits and vegetables with vitamins A & C.

I am convinced that I am going to live 10-20 longer, healthier years as a result of taking Mounjaro.

Yep.

I would take a GLP-1 in a heartbeat if my insurance company would cover it, but my nurse practitioner has tried repeatedly and they absolutely refuse. Metformin is helping get my A1C down only slightly; it’s still too high. I’m thinking about trying a compounded sema or tirz out of pocket.

Glad you are having such good, sustained results!
