Amazon Raked in Billions While Whole Foods Workers Say They Even Can’t Afford Basic Necessities

Amazon told shareholders Thursday that it made nearly $78 billion in net income during 2025 — while workers at its subsidiary Whole Foods Market say they struggle to afford basic necessities due to unlivable working wages.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017 and now employs over 100,000 workers nationwide offering a starting wage of $17 an hour. Philadelphia Whole Foods workers organized a union in January 2025 and its members claim their employer’s parent company —founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos — has violated labor law, illegally retaliated against workers and rejected and delayed bargaining with the union for better wage agreements. “Amazon Chairman Jeff Bezos is worth over $240 billion and Whole Foods executives are paid tens of millions of dollars a year. We, the workers of Whole Foods, are generating a significant portion of their wealth, but we continue to be squeezed. They have eroded our culture and increasingly treat us more like numbers than humans,” Rob Jennings, a Philadelphia Whole Foods worker and member the union, Whole Foods Workers United, said in a statement.

Yet workers still work there....and lots of them. If its so horrid, go elsewhere: someplace that rewards stocking shelves and unloading a truck.

[Disclaimer: WF is a very smug store. I only go when there are deeply discounted items I use. The woke leftism is so pervasive, I feel like I need to shower after a visit.]

That’s the market for unskilled labor in relatively cushy environments.

Deport the 50 million-plus illegals here currently, and we’ll get closer to what such labor earned, in relative terms, a few decades ago.

Theyre is a torrent of communist propaganda right now.

Some here even argued that artificial wage inflation isn’t causing inflation.

Yeah Amazon is making money, and creating tons of jobs. After the idiots destroy them the jobs will be gone

That’s there real goal - endless poverty and drug profits.

Every job isn’t supposed to support a family. Morons don’t understand this. $17 minimum wage is a huge inflation.

Bezos laid off 30 percent of WP employees. Expect a lot more negative press in the future.

“We, the workers of Whole Foods, are generating a significant portion of their wealth”

Communist clap-trap.
The customers generate ALL of the wealth at Whole Foods.

Stop immigration and kick out the illegals and they’d have to pay more unless the government subsidizes their paychecks with welfare.

58% of Amazon’s profits come from selling computer horsepower from its Amazon Web Services unit.

They make more money selling compute than they do shipping cheap Chinese crap to your door or overpriced organic food from Whole Foods.

Wages are falling vs wages every year. Inflation is caused by too many dollars chasing too few goods. Reckless spending is causing inflation and not blue collar wages.

There was a study that showed if Walmart in Ohio charged one percent more for their goods they could afford pay their employees enough to get off public assistance.

It’s funny, the shoppers at Whole Foods think they are buying “woke quality.”

In the end, their Amazon overlords are making bank on these fools.

Working on a grocery store was wonderful as a student. It was great for part time second incomes. The people who managed departments, or the specialty folks (Butchers specifically) do OK. But stockers and cashiers are very replaceable.

In ten years most grocery jobs will be eliminated and automated. You won’t be going to Whole Foods, you will be going to ROBO Mart.

34k a year is tough, but they probably get health care (I hope). I’m paying 30k per year for health insurance because of the millions of medical tourists who are getting care for free (emergency rooms can’t deny care, it’s illegal), and Obamacare subsidized patients paying less than the value of their care, so hospitals have to jack up the price for everyone else. The leftist strategy is to screw up an industry with regulations, then claim the only solution is for the government to take it over. They sit in their ivory towers planning this stuff and make 200k per year as university professors to write books about how to do it.

Whole Foods is a small subsidiary of the Amazon corporate sprawl. WF employees did not generate Amazon’ wealth, but they can easily be replaced with robots in about 5 years.

When you grab something off the shelf at Walmart that costs $50 the amount of labor to handle that good from the truck to shelf is about 1/4 cents. It’s basically nothing.

Replacing the stockers with robots is not going to reduce prices for the customer because the value added is trivial. The reason bacon costs 8 bucks isn’t because the stocker got a 2 dollar an hour raise.

You need to own and operate a grocery store—and then run the numbers of your store.
