Residents of a liberal city in Missouri have been complaining to officials that it stinks of cannabis everywhere they go.
In Rock Hill, Missouri, a small city with a population of around 4,700 in the St Louis metropolitan area, the number of complaints about cannabis odor shot up in the second half of 2025.
The city received 99 complaints about stinky weed between April and December of last year. Rock Hill's city administrator Garrett Schlett told the St Louis Post-Dispatch the number represents a significant uptick from previous years.
Missouri legalized medical marijuana use in 2018, and recreational use was legalized in late 2022.
In 2021, Missouri-based cannabis company Proper Brands opened a facility in Rock Hill's Industrial Court, which is where the stench that residents have been complaining about originates.
Proper Brands' 60,000 square foot warehouse cultivates marijuana plants and manufactures a variety of cannabis products.
According to the company's CEO, John Pennington, the strong odor inside can escape and be carried by wind when employees leave or exit the warehouse.
And the wind takes the odor far. Schlett, the city administrator, said he and others can sometimes smell it at city hall, which is about half a mile from the warehouse.

Our suburban small town neighborhood in New Jersey has the same problem. Can’t walk down the street without being greeted with “the stench” every fifth house or so.

Now we are getting to re learn why those behaviors were banned
Classic ignoring of G. K. Chesterton's "fence" principle:

Can’t walk down the street without being greeted with “the stench” every fifth house or so. I smell it while driving. I've been behind a single car with only a driver and I couldn't believe the stench.
They drive while smoking it and don't even care. It's like how it's been in ghetto neighborhoods, uninterrupted since the 1950s. Or in a lot of other neighborhoods in the 1960s and 1970s.

Almost no one could have seen that coming.

"No Smoking" signs in many hotel rooms include pictograms for tobacco, marijuana, and vape.

I can just see a pothead zombie lurching around moaning, “Eggggs! Eggggs!”

They hang out in big box store parking lots and smoke it in their cars. I guess they don't want to stink up their own houses with it.
Give me tobacco smoke over the pot stink any day. It's absolutely gross.

How do the employees find the exit?

Better examine the minutes of the city hall meetings.

It’s still called skunkweed and most of it is skunkweed today That's what I don't understand. It didn't smell like skunk back in my day. It had a distinct smell that you could recognize easily, but it wasn't skunk smell. What has changed?
