Ancient Hittite Cuneiform Fragment Unearthed in Central Europe Puzzles Archaeologists

A stone fragment bearing ancient carvings in Hittite style and one of the world’s earliest writing systems, cuneiform, has been uncovered in a cave deep in the Moravian Karst. The discovery of this mysterious ancient cuneiform script in Central Europe has puzzled archaeologists and raised questions about possible cultural links between Anatolia and prehistoric Europe.

The artifact, found during a recent reanalysis of excavated sediment in Kateřinská Cave, Czech Republic, shares material and stylistic traits with earlier fragments uncovered in 2021. Experts say the thickness, composition, and carvings of all the pieces suggest they were once part of the same object. The carvings appear to depict deities similar to those at the Hittite sanctuary of Yazılıkaya, located in present-day Turkey.

The Czech Caves Administration confirmed the find, noting that laboratory tests indicate the slate may have originated from central Anatolia, the core region of the Hittite Empire around 1500 BC.

However, the presence of such an object in a prehistoric European cave remains unexplained, creating what archaeologists are calling a major chronological and cultural contradiction...

At the height of Hittite civilization in the Near East, Central Europe had no known writing systems and practiced entirely different religious traditions.

cave czechia cuneiform fragments

Kateřinská Cave in the Moravian Karst of the Czech Republic has recently yielded extraordinary archaeological discoveries, including cuneiform fragments and 8,000-year-old shell ornaments.

Cuneiform Fragments: In late 2025, researchers uncovered a new fragment of a stone tablet bearing cuneiform script, one of the world’s oldest writing systems. This discovery follows earlier finds of slate fragments depicting Hittite-style carvings—specifically, a procession of deities resembling those at the Yazılıkaya sanctuary in modern-day Turkey. Laboratory analysis suggests the stone likely originated in central Anatolia, the heartland of the Hittite Empire around 1500 BCE. The presence of these artifacts in Central Europe raises profound questions about ancient trade, cultural exchange, or the possibility of a historical hoax.

Neolithic Artifacts: Alongside the cuneiform fragments, archaeologists identified four fully preserved and two incomplete shell ornaments made from Danube river snail shells. Radiocarbon dating confirms these items are over 8,000 years old, placing them in the Neolithic period. These personal adornments are among the oldest known in the Czech Republic and suggest ritual or ceremonial use of the cave.

Ongoing Mystery: The origin and context of the cuneiform fragments remain unresolved. While some experts propose long-distance trade or ancient migration, others consider the possibility of a deliberate forgery, given that the cave has been explored since the 19th century. The Czech Caves Administration and research partners—including Palacký University and the Nuclear Physics Institute—continue to analyze the artifacts.
Cultural Significance: The cave has been under systematic study since 2016 and is now a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status due to its rich prehistoric and medieval layers, including the first known medieval counterfeiters’ workshop in the region. Guided tours are available, though the site closes in winter to protect bat populations.

These findings challenge long-held assumptions about prehistoric Europe and highlight the complex, interconnected nature of ancient human societies.

It’s a receipt. “One donut. 80¢. Thank you, come again.”

😆 That scene gave a new meaning to "batter up".
Donuts are or at least used to be very popular breakfast food in nearby Canada.
Aften whizzing away millions in his youth, singer Rod Stewart got smarter and made a number of investments, including a chain of donut-and-coffee places, called, you guessed it, the "Every Picture Tells a Story Donut Shop".
Rimshot!

The Hittite Empire is interesting in where the capital was. It was dependent on just about everything, a very unnatural place for people to be living at. When Civilization itself collapsed in 1177 B.C. that was the last of them. How a fragment of this lost empire ended up hundreds of miles to the North in a cave is enough of a problem to believe it was merely a clever fake. Especially since it was only found recently.

The conventional dating is wrong, and there was no civilizational collapse followed by a dark age. Finding cuneiform from the Hittites in this cave isn’t anomalous.

My guess: brought there by someone later on. It’s not like all things stay where they started.
I found an arrow head in my home town as a child and kept it with me as I moved to various places over years. I don’t know who made it or when or how it got to where I found it, and I moved it from the place I found it.

I have no problem believing that Civilization collapsed in 1177 B.C. . In fact I’m surprised it does not happen more often. History is filled with stories of peoples who started a Civilization only for it to sputter away, like a candle flame blown out. Fortunately for us that flame eventually burned bright enough for it to stay lit long enough for some real progress to occur.

The alleged collapse isn’t actually documented anywhere, it’s a modern invention made necessary by the pseudochronology constructed for Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries. It didn’t happen.

The late Bronze age civilization collapse didn’t ‘sputter away’ civilizations, it was a catastrophic series of invasions and collapse .

After all of Civilization's achievements is it possible some horrible thing could take it down? A big asteroid use to be sufficient but we actually could do something about that now. The biggest threat is Hydrogen bombs.

Those bombs dropped on Japan were mere firecrackers compared to these Fusion devices. (Called the 'Super' by their inventors) . The blasts have no real limit. They can be scaled up to any size some evil heart desires. The United States limits them to 20 Megatons only because anything bigger than that has the extra energy wasted by being blown into space.

What is to be done about this very real threat to everything we hold dear? Elon Musk knows and has devoted his life, quite profitably, to the cure: Multi planet Civilizations. People spread out all over the Solar System would be very hard to wipe out because of the absolute need to be utterly self sufficient in that hostile environment.

“is it possible some horrible thing could take it down? “

Volcanoes.

“Around 1200 BC, significant volcanic eruptions included the Hekla 3 eruption in Iceland, which is believed to have caused a volcanic winter and contributed to famines during the Late Bronze Age collapse. This period was marked by widespread societal disruptions across the Eastern Mediterranean.”

I did think of Volcanos , I just didn’t want to mention them because there is little we can do about them . You can get some idea of where they are about to blow but other than that they remain the biggest natural threat we face . Especially the Yellowstone super volcano.

Did they translate the tablet? If they did, was it the ancestor of AOC telling people that the ancestor of President Trump is bad? 😀

A few months ago I watched a documentary and they also mentioned a volcano in Alaska that could have triggered a period of global cooling at that time. Cooler temps would mean less ocean evaporation and less rainfall, hurting crop yields. At least, that was what the documentary posited.
