Rosie Jones spoke about her concerns regarding jokes made about transgender people by some well-known comedians. She said she was frustrated by what she described as “privileged cis white straight men” making jokes about “the trans community”, and named Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr in particular.
Jones said: “It’s your Ricky Gervaises and Jimmy Carrs… To those boys, I’d say, with respect, shut the f— up.”
She argued that comedians who do not share the experiences of the groups they joke about should reconsider whether they are the right people to be making those jokes. In her view, comedy should take greater account of identity, power and impact, particularly when dealing with marginalised communities. Alongside this criticism, Jones outlined what she described as advice on “how to joke responsibly”. She presented this not as a formal rulebook, but as a set of questions comedians should ask themselves before telling a joke.
The first question is about identity and experience. Comedians should consider who they are and whether they have “lived experience”, or experience close to them, of the subject they are joking about. Without that connection, she suggested, jokes risk missing context or causing harm, particularly when aimed at groups whose voices are often marginalised.
The second consideration she raised was intention. Jones said comedians should ask whether they are “punching up” or “punching down”.
The final question concerns purpose. Jones said comedians should think carefully about why they are telling a joke in the first place. She suggested that jokes can be used to “open up a conversation” or encourage audiences to think differently, rather than being told simply to provoke a reaction or generate controversy.
