EU Arms Its Next CO₂ Weapon
American Thinker ^ | 9 Jan, 2026 | Thomas Kolbe

At what point will civil society pull the plug on a policy that systematically extracts its economic base?

As of January 1, imports into the EU are now subject to the comprehensive CO2 certification regime. Brussels is closing existing gaps in its protectionist extraction scheme. At the same time, the European Commission has established another autonomous revenue source.

For aficionados of the lean state and free markets, 2025 was already a disaster. And there is every reason to believe that further bitterness awaits in the coming months. The kickoff of the 2026 fiscal raid is now being led, once again, by Brussels.

Following the increase of the tonnage price under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) from €55 to €65, the European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen has struck again. Since the start of the year, importers in the EU are subject to the so-called Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This mechanism effectively extends the European emissions trading system to foreign trade.

Emissions Trading at the Border

Importers are now obliged to identify emissions-intensive goods, analyze them in detail, and purchase corresponding certificates for every ton of CO2 emitted during production and transport. Officially, the EU aims to prevent so-called carbon leakages -- the relocation of CO2-intensive production processes to countries with lower environmental standards.

What began as a kind of adjustment phase with Kafkaesque documentation requirements in October 2023 is now being dramatically expanded and monetized. CBAM now covers around 180 processed products containing steel or aluminum, including machinery, car parts, household appliances, agricultural equipment, and bridge components. The result: processes become more complex, and import chains more expensive.

Ultimately, as is often the case, the consumer bears the cost. The industrial mid-sized sector, tied to German or European locations, is hit particularly hard, losing competitiveness

Agreed. The only silver lining is if it leads to each country becoming more self sustaining.

“European Commission has established another autonomous revenue source”

An autonomous ( ie unelected) collective with international taxation authority

What could go wrong?

And they want to squeal about tariffs?
Maybe Trump should rename his tariffs as “ carbon abatement fees”

Come on Europe, revolt. The world is richer when England is England, Spain is Spain, Germany is Germany and France is....uh...ok, France. And Islam is back where it originated - permanently.

These people are insane!

CO2 is a life-giving gas. In the ancient past it reached nearly 8,000ppm and currently sits at 427ppm. In 1800 it was at 283ppm. If CO2 levels reach 150ppm photosynthesis in plants cannot take place and all life on land ceases to exist. I don't know what the minimum level for phyto-plankton is in our oceans which also eats CO2.

We need more CO2 instead of less! We could easily have it at 1,000ppm and be just fine.

I don't know if Trump was ever successful or not in legally repealing CO2's status as a pollutant.

Why not be honest?

Its tariff, its a tax that hits the poor and middle class hardest.

An 18% rise in the taxes on fuel? That's not going to hurt anyone. Is it?

If the left could destroy all life on the planet, don’t you think they would do it?

I’ll 2nd that. Once great nations that chose to lose all their ancestors fought for, chose lessen their sovereignty, chose to attack the means of production, chose to lessen economic capability, chose to be invaded, and chose to let Muslims take over…. Liberalism is suicidal.

Well. We should take one of two paths:
  1. Close off all imports from Europe.

  2. Gundeck the documentation. Just fabricate it. Make it up. It is what the Communist Chinese will do (If they don't just get a codicil which completely exempts them). Give every single item, even a five ton generator with lithium battery backups built in, the required documentation that describes the carbon footprint of a dog turd.

Germany committed suicide. They were an export driven economy, that’s where their wealth came from. Now they have spent their savings chasing an imaginary concept.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Total suppression of anthropogenic carbon dioxide is a fool’s errand, and shall never be accomplished. How does anybody distinguish a carbon dioxide molecule formed through normal life process, and one formed by combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel?

Carbon dioxide is a TRAILING indicator of ambient atmospheric temperatures. The most important “greenhouse gas” and the only one that any significance in climate change, is water vapor.

And nobody has come up with a practical way to control the formation and condensation of water vapor. Natural forces take pretty good care of that process.

There is report circulating indicating that Germany is rapidly failing.

Industrial Germany relies on piped in natural gas.

No Gas, no industry.

The Trump tariffs have had an effect on German auto imports. The German auto industry is beyond the point of recovery.

Bad news, very bad news for Germans
