Black cherry (Prunus serotina), the largest of the native cherries and the only one of commercial value, is found throughout the Eastern United States. It is also known as wild black cherry, rum cherry, and mountain black cherry. Large, high-quality trees suited for furniture wood or veneer are found in large numbers in a more restricted commercial range on the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia

Kawhill....Any additional comments on cherry trees or cherry wood?

I'll add these; Cherry Blossoms are beautiful in the spring. (Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival)

Cherry wood...like other fruit woods you can use it for smoking.

Wood working... A good even grained wood for furniture which starts out with a lite pinkish/yellow color but darkens with time and age.

The fruit. I love the taste of the fruit. Tillamook dairy makes a Black Cherry Ice cream. (Not dairy product, full milk fat ice cream.) Incredible taste! Here is a Youtube from Jenny's European Bakery on making a Cherry Pie

Jenny's European Bakery... Juicy Cherry Pie Recipe with Flaky Crust – Pure Heaven!

But, we are in Kansas... Osage Orange Slide....we have a lot of Osage Orange trees planted along the boundry of farms. Take an osage orange, plant it along the lines of your section, in a few years string your barbed wire on the new trees. Also called Bois 'd Arc tree because it was used by the Plains Indians to make bows. (There are a number of videos on guys making bows from Osage wood. Here is one! )

If you have goats, remember that black cherry trees can kill goats, but primarily when the leaves are in a wilted state (e.g., from a fallen branch after a storm).

Hubby and I learned the hard way a few years ago and had to go through our property and cut down all the cherry trees. We no longer have goats and the cherry trees are back. I guess we didn’t get them all.

I recently made a Black Cherry Hard Cider. My fourth try at making any kind of alcoholic beverage. It turned out great, kinda like a good quality sparkling wine; about like a lambrusco, but a bit fruitier. Gonna make more!

Thanks! I really want to make that cherry pie! (Not planning to make the bow at this point.)

Jenny, the baker, moved to Denver. She also has some good videos on making sourdough breads and other bakery items.

The wilted leaves can also kill deer apparently.

Canada Dry still has Wishenak.

Frank's beverages, which was Philly institution for decades, bottled wishniak, which AI reports is a word of Polish origin from the word for cherry. After Frank's got bought out, others bottled the soda. Now Canada Dry, Hank's and Stewart's all sell wisniak.

The wild black cherry is not the same species as the commercial black cherry.
Wild black cherries are quite small and hard to reach because of the great height of wild cherry trees.

The seeds of wild black cherry can lie dormant for several years until there is a sunny opening above them.

Domestic prunus species, such as the sweet Prunus avium and the sour Prunus cerasus and dark black domestic cherries like you find in Tillamuk ice cream aren’t closely related to the wild black cherry in the article that grows all over the country in abandoned pasture , meadows and in the hedgerows. Wild black cherry is sometimes called rum cherry.

Love them all much better than the unrelated Senegal Cherry we have growing as an invasive here in Florida.

I think I gave one of the wild ones coming up here some bird must have sown for me, we are just at the south edge of the trees’ native range but too far south to grow domestic cherries, not enough chill hours fir domestic cherry to set fruit.
