Publix has long been considered Florida's favorite supermarket, but it seems customers are turning their backs on the grocery giant.
One frustrated shopper recently took to Reddit to air their grievances after picking up a prime tenderloin steak at a Publix store in Yulee, Florida.
A photo of the package showed the meat priced at a jaw-dropping $61.49 — or $49.99 per pound.
'This is criminal,' the customer wrote.
'You can get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Florida at a Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31,' one wrote.
'Publix is wildly overpriced,' someone else chimed in.

Broke down and bought a roast that was a slice of beef. A slice?!? Gone are the days of our family ranch when we always had freezers full of beef.
I have a Publix and a Lowe’s Foods within a couple of blocks of me.
Both very good.
Publix has the better coleslaw.
Ours moved to a new building a block away. The parking lot is reason enough not to go. Whoever designed it out to spend eternity in a cell with just Brio train sets with no trains.
The fried chicken were so small, they should call them fried chicks. You had to ask to find the price for fried chicken because they want you to buy a whole meal. I only stop by because I like and buy their store brand pizza sauce.
America’s beef herd is low due to drought and a few other issues; and demand is higher. The high prices are not due to inflation. And Trump has been trying to get the price down, like cutting out the middle man who ranchers are upset with. It takes a few years go increase the size of the heard. America should have a better plan in place to protect the size of the herd. But then, half of Americans don’t know what a man and a woman are.
If you buy the meat on sale at Publix you can get very good deals. They had NY Strip loin on sale for $7.99 lbs for 2 weeks through Christmas. I had the butcher cut into inch and a half strip steaks. I have a freezer full of strip steaks now that will feed me for a month.

The label in the picture says prime. Wanna bet that Outback doesn’t serve prime cuts?

A lot of the reduced supply comes from the 2022 drought, when farmers butchered more cattle because it got too expensive to feed them.
Now it’s difficult to rebuild the herds because the price of meat is so high it encourages selling now.
Demand is finally starting to shrink, which should bring prices down slowly.
Other factors they mention are a tariff on beef from Brazil (76%, but I’m not sure how much beef we ever got from Brazil anyway) and a block on cattle from Mexico because of a screwworm parasite (probably a bigger factor.)
A shop at Publix to avoid cultural enrichment. The premium I pay is worth it.

Winn Dixie sold 400 stores to .... Aldi. Think what that means. Germans who own Trader Joes... now bought out Winn Dixie.
Incidentally, all here- the Outback “tenderloin” steak quoted in the article, is assuredly NOT tenderloin (aged or otherwise). It is, as any beef rancher/processor seller will tell you— a fake cut of compounded beef.
A trick played by a lot of restaurant chains. Not so much the really upscale chop houses, but Outback and Longhorn.
One would be better off buying the real tenderloin and taking the time to prep it properly.

I’m pretty sure Outback doesn’t service prime cuts of organic foods.
“Greenwise” is Publix “organic” source beef iirc. Organic, like regular beef on a feedlot isn’t “organic”.
This is free-range tenderloin? Thinking this is what this is. Have not seen a price like this.... anywhere. Not Fresh Market, not “Amazon”/Whole Foods or even private butcher chains.
Publix (the Jenkins family in particular) are good people— unless something happened in their boardroom. The main reason— profit sharing with employees. They are expanding perhaps more than they can handle, though.
Yes we refer to the Kroger near us as “Ghetto Kroger” the only thing we buy there is toilet paper and paper towels. Their meat is inedible. Singles has the best meat at a good price but all the ones in Atlanta are closed down. There’s a good one near our rural compound.
Might as well get Omaha Steaks.
You know who can afford to pay the price, no matter how high it is? Illegal aliens and American blacks on SNAP. Price is no object to them, as their SNAP/EBT accounts are overflowing with funds.
I wouldn’t bet on that assertion. Restaraunts get what is basically ‘first dibs’ on the quality beef. Everything at the consumer level is below the quality of most restaraunts, even if it is PRIME it is not the same PRIME you’d get at Texas Roadhouse or something.

Prime over the bridge at Harris Teeter on Amelia Island was circa 35 per pound. I passed on that and got an 8 lb tenderloin for 120 albeit it was not prime it was still good enough for family christmas dinner.
Last evening we had Dungeness crab at $15 per pound. Succulent so no need buy beef!
Will need pop some additional statin drugs before my blood test on monday!!
I make my own coleslaw, but I haven’t tried Publix’s in a long time. Maybe next year when I go to the beach, I’ll remember to out that on the grocery list.
I’ve never heard of Lowe’s Foods. Is it related to the hardware store?
And, the solution is? Stop shopping Publix!
Once the price of beef comes down, they will care a lot about methane from cattle digestion and how it contributes to Climate Change.
In the “hometown” of Publix there’s very little choice of grocery. Aldi, Publix, or WalMart. Winn-Dixie was here but got bought out and closed by Aldi. It would be great to have more competition. Publix is generally more expensive. In other states Publix bogos you can get just one at half off (if you don’t need 2 loaves of bread for example) but in FL it’s get 2 or no deal.
