Publix has long been considered Florida's favorite supermarket, but it seems customers are turning their backs on the grocery giant.
One frustrated shopper recently took to Reddit to air their grievances after picking up a prime tenderloin steak at a Publix store in Yulee, Florida.
A photo of the package showed the meat priced at a jaw-dropping $61.49 — or $49.99 per pound.
'This is criminal,' the customer wrote.
'You can get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Florida at a Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31,' one wrote.
'Publix is wildly overpriced,' someone else chimed in.

I like Costco’s meat. That having been said if you finds sale at Winn Dixie it’s likely to be cheaper than Costco.
That does it!
I’m taking my business to Erewhon and Whole Foods.

Get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Fla
at Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31.
Granted, $50/lb is outrageous, but you are looking at their best cut of meat, prime grade, under their “Greenwise” label. As for us two, we economize by getting an 8oz. Tenderloin and dividing it between us, making sure we have a side dish or salad to help fill. If we want more meat, braised chuck roast can be phenomenal if you know how to make it.
The prices may be higher than other stores, but the workers there are pleasant, knowledgeable, and kind, and the stores are CLEAN and orderly.
I don’t have a Publix anywhere near me. The closest one is a 3 hour drive each way. However, if Publix ever acquiesced to my inquiries, I’d be happy to drive an hour away just to have the privilege of shopping there.
Whenever I’m down South, I’m the first one to offer to do the grocery shopping if it’s to a Publix. It is where shopping is a PLEASURE.
I checked out Publix when it came to Virginia, and it was way overpriced then!
Plus the bakery was not good- 2 things that matter to me in grocery. Meat and bread, haha.
Standing Rib Roast, prime $6.77/lb - limit of two in the weeks leading up to Christmas around here.....not at Publix. Strip roast was about $1/lb more. I stocked up and did the same.
Chicken wings are a great deal... and if you buy the premade sandwiches, that is a good deal too. They really pack those sandwiches.
Aren’t they “The Beef People”? We called ‘em the “Beer People,” as a play on that.
“I like Costco for bulk.”
Costco is our main goto. We have three within 15 miles.
Aldi for some veggies and fruits.
Publix BOGOs, fruits, milk,
I bought our 3.8 pound beef tenderloin this year for $146 at Publix. The binging boob at the meat counter wrote down my order 3 days before Christmas on a piece of >>>> I got my first cut 4 rib 10lb prime rib at shoprite in eddystone, pa. it was $129. not cheap but they were putting various cuts out on the friday before christmas. Slow cooked excellent.
As a low-end landlord I can tell you one reason. All those EBT cards and government giveaways for food are used to purchase premium meat for resale at cents on the dollar. This is how the receivers of government largess get the money for cigarettes, beer, drugs and lotto tickets. I had a renter who told me she’d had no solid food for six months, just beer. Her refrigerator had two giant stacks of steaks and one stack of beer cases. When she moved out in the summer without telling me, just ahead of the cops, she took the beer and left the meat. With the power off. In the summer.
LOL
I believe the issue is Publix which charges higher prices, probably pays higher wages.
But, but cows fart. So much gas. We're all going to DIE..!!
My elderly mom bought about 10 pounds of unprocessed tenderloin from Aldi this holiday season for around $100. After dissecting the tenderloin, she was left with about 5 pounds of quality beef. The weather was nice in Illinois on Christmas so I grilled a bunch of filets on Christmas day.
A lot of restaurants use cuts off utility cattle to serve to their customers. Especially the luncheon filets.
“I prefer WinnDixie.”
I do to, for certain things.
Like I said, along with Publix I grocery shop at 4 other stores for 2 reasons.
1. Each store carrys something the others don’t or
2. I’ll go to a certain store because something will be cheapest there.
When I do go to Publix, I always try to find as many BOGOsas possible.
I bought a 7.4 pound 3 rib prime rib at Publix in Columbia, South Carolina for $75. It was excellent quality. Not sure why Florida would be so high.
IF I could have found one of similar quality and size in Wisconsin, it would have cost well over $100. I’ve been underwhelmed with the quality of meat in WI and astonished by the prices.
Yep. There’s a huge difference between meat.
A friend suggested I give Publix a try despite the higher price, and I finally did. I used a reverse sear—225° oven followed by a very hot stovetop sear—and it turned out to be one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, including in restaurants (and I’ve had plenty of great restaurant steaks).
