If you let them grow really long, they curl into long closed cylinders like drinking straws in front of your feet, and you can carry small things in them like TicTac breath mints. Very handy.
It does however present a challenge for buying closed-toe shoes, hence the widespread use of sandals.

I sat next to a guy on a plane who started clipping his nails before we even took off once. And this was in Business Class. Then he put on the socks that were in the goody bag the airline provided.
There were toenail clippings on the floor by his seat. Fortunately, I had the aisle seat.
What is wrong with people?
