HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man has died in what police are calling a “freak accident” in a McDonald’s drive-thru Tuesday morning.
Police and firefighters were called just before 10:30 a.m. to the McDonalds on 2nd Street, where they found a man trapped between his vehicle and the fast food restaurant payment window. He was taken to the CHI St. Francis emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said it was “100% a freak accident”.
“It appears the deceased opened the door to further reach out the window for payment purposes.” Elliott said. “We’re not sure if the vehicle lurched forward or what happened, but he got pinched between the door frame and the drive thru window counter.”
That’s smart. I always do. Being face to face with bank staff so they know you might come in handy some day.
I recently heard of a recall involving (?)Ford Pickups I think, of them starting to move while in park. What was he driving?
I go to one of my bankers for advise all the time...buying a car...what happens to my bank accounts???
He probably suffocated, so he suffered for a few minutes.
I bet he wishes he bad tat window fixed.
I see too many people do this. I don’t know if they’re bad at judging distance or what.
I never put my car in park.
I can’t imagine stopping @ the window and NOT putting the trans in “Park”. Most times I shut the car off.
The closest I’ve been to such an accident was when I was maybe 25(?) and my old beater Oldsmobile had “died”. I was trying to push it a bit further off the road, by myself, at the driver’s side door, managed to get a front wheel over a “bump”, but didn’t realize the overall slope was slightly downhill. I slipped as I was trying to get back in the car, and “could” have fallen underneath, but I was young and limber and more off balance than down: I managed to sort of awkwardly hop in anyway. That was a bit of a “Whew!” wake up moment.
A friend of mine had his parked car involved in a 3 car accident where no-one was driving. His neighbor, who was the irresponsible party, managed to run himself over while moving vehicles around.
At first glance I figured he just started eating his order before driving on, thats enough to kill anybody.
Collapsed lungs?
At 72, I am at that stage of life as well. Drive throughs are not your friend. No ladders or step stools. Avoid driving at night or in rain. No going about barefoot. Easy on the booze. No spicy food.
Also at 72, I should be doing things like that...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
“Saturated fat? Not climate change, the legacy of racism, or homophobia?”
Good point, perhaps a combination of factors.
No doubt they will sue and if they prevail the people who frequent mcdonalds will pay for this person’s stupidity.

Those drive-up and pay with your card windows are a pain. I can’t get too close or I’ll whack my side view mirror, so I have to reach over either with my left hand, or turn and cross over with my right to get my card in the right way, and in the right slot. Sometimes at night the glare from the screen makes it hard to see the slot. I find them annoying to use.
“Dead Like Me” is very dark humor at its very best.
I would have loved to have seen another season or two of that series, even though I thought Mandy Patinkin “phoned-in” his initial episodes.
My guess is he was leaning left with the door open and pushing off his right foot...which happened to be on the gas pedal.
Yes, car in park whenever door is opened. The lift gate on my Expedition won’t operate unless the car is in park.
