Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia, new meds made him ‘out of his head’ before parents’ murders: sources

Nick Reiner was schizophrenic, and his new medication was making him “out of his head” in the weeks before he allegedly killed his dad, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, and his mom, Michele, according to a report.

The iconic director’s troubled middle child, 32, was being treated by a psychiatrist for his condition — but in the month before the murders, his behavior became “alarming” as doctors switched his medication, sources told TMZ.

About three to four weeks before Rob Reiner and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood mansion, his prescription was altered, making him “erratic and dangerous,” the sources said.

Doctors were trying to adjust his medication to balance him out — but the adjustment reportedly was not working and, combined with his substance abuse, actually made things worse.

Once his medication was changed, “Nick was out of his head,” a source told TMZ.

Guy has been a nutjob his entire life but, yeah, it was the meds.

I’d say it was the damn drugs he’d been using since he was a teen. Mom and Dad probably told him no more money and he flipped out.

Blaming the [prescription] drug is easy enough

Not when he's also taking copious amounts of illegal drugs at the same time.

Genetic testing?? I've known several people on several different drugs. There was absolutely no genetic testing involved in any of the people I've known.

Maybe it was the drugs...maybe not...we shall see. All we know was that he was in a fighting mood the night before.

Yes, it could have been.

Given that I have no functioning CYP2d6 (and problems in other genes) it is quite possible one of my schizo relatives had at least one half of the CYP2d6 drug processing problem. Even 1/2 of the problem could cause problems with those drugs. It could have caused real problems in my relatives treatment and behavior.

It is a minefield waiting to blow up. Many Doctors dont test for it. I found out on my own by chance.

No, they don’t. My 10 year old daughter was prescribed Keppea for seizures when she was 10.

My sweet little girl starting getting so mad she punched walls in our home.

The neurologist, pharmacist, nor the insert warned me about rage (and also stuttering). Her neurologist insisted the meds weren’t the cause, but switched her to lamictal. The rage and stuttering went away.

I started researching and online there are lots of people who report the rage.

This was 30 years ago, and now it’s pretty common knowledge.

(Google keppra rage)

When there is a problem with a Drug..especially a psych drug, it is the first thing a Doctor should check.

My experience in this is that Doctor’s have heard of the issue but don’t know a damn thing about it.

However, a Dr prescribing heavy duty psych drugs should damn well think about it

No CYP2d6 as well as other enzyme issues can turn even amitriptyline into a very dangerous drug.

Doctors have a DUTY to know this.

Gee for someone who was supposedly “Schizophrenic” he was sure able to figure out how to drive to a hotel in Santa Monica, check himself in, shower, and drive to Exposition Park(Near USC) and buy himself a gaterade..either his lawyer(Who got Karen Reade off) is going to go with an insanity defense or go with the Mendendez abuse excuse

1. Nick will walk.

That's how the Meathead would have wanted it.

I’m the opposite of a fan of Meathead, but it will be a travesty if this killer walks here on a “not guilty by reason of insanity” claim. Sure, he was crazy... because of all drugs (legal and illegal) that he’s been voluntarily using for the last 20 years. And if he was sane enough to get around L.A., leave the scene of the crime, buy drugs, etc.,his a then he’s sane enough to be held accountable for his actions.

Wonder who gets the 200M estate- the other brother? Sort of like the murdering brothers who were “orphaned” when they murdered their parents. This is NUTSO if so.

Blame Pharma— not the genetics and the OTHER major dope this a@@clown has been doing in and out of expensive rehab for years! It didn’t work, and no, the drugs do not enhance schizophrenia— only if he unddoubtedly stopped taking them (couldn’t get it up for his boy or girlfriends). No way should this guy have been living on the grounds of their home.

For e pluribus— “Deserves Got Nothing to Do with This” (Unforgiven). Bad judgement having this thing around them— does:

Goodness! I hope they don’t simply change his meds and release him into society.

Your daughter should keep the following in mind which will require a lot of research. I say this as a person who has problems with the gene associated with that drug.

Here is what AI says about Keppra

Studies have shown that levetiracetam can be a substrate for certain multi-drug transporters, specifically:
P-glycoprotein (P-gp): Levetiracetam is a substrate of the human P-gp transporter.

Multidrug Resistance Proteins (MRPs): Levetiracetam is also a substrate for MRPs (likely MRP1 and MRP2).

So in the future you daughter has to keep a close eye on any drug that is a substrate of P-gp in case there is something in her genes that caused her problem.

And to show you how complicated this is...you may have to use an AI program to find out that substrate issue. For example ADMET predicts that Gadavist (MRI contrast) is a substrate of P-gp

Bingo— recidivism from non-compliance and taking lots of street drugs with more bang to the dose— heroin comes to mind as well as several others.

Look at the face, the jaw structure, his gait.... it was dope that delivered this. And self- fooling endulgent parents trying to feel good about what they were doing keeping him around. Very difficult when he is an adult.

Schizophrenia has a very large genetic component, which, no matter what idiots in the biz say, is hugely aggravated and the regions triggered by real high power marijuana (The Schedule II is appropriate) which THC crosses the blood brain barrier and triggers the genetic regions that are inherited/dosed in these individuals.

He took his drug addicted son who’d been to rehab over a dozen times to a Hollywood party where alcohol and drugs are used as a matter decorum at these venues.

Meathead Reiner said his reason was, “So I could keep an eye on him.” ☺

Yeah I agree with all that. The only one to blame is Nick and I suspect he will be locked up for a while. Nick was born into a privileged rich family and blew it.

Yes. The doctors will be sued. I read where Nick told a friend that he was having difficulty with the new meds and it was really affecting him.
I’ve thought all along that he had a psychotic break from the meds and from schizophrenia. I doubt he even remembered what he did.
