Four Republicans buck Mike Johnson to join Hakeem Jeffries' Obamacare push
Fox News ^ | December 17, 2025 | Elizabeth Elkind

Four moderate House Republicans are rebelling against Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to join his Democratic counterpart in forcing a vote on enhanced Obamacare subsidies set to expire at the end of this year.

Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa., Rob Bresnahan, R-Pa., and Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., all joined a discharge petition by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., on his push for a three-year extension of the subsidies.

A discharge petition is a mechanism for overriding the will of House leaders to get a chamber-wide vote on specific legislation, provided it has support from a majority of lawmakers.

In this case, the four House Republicans' signatures put Jeffries' petition at 218 — clinching the critical majority threshold.

"I've always supported bipartisan solutions that would bring about healthcare affordability in this country," Mackenzie told Fox News Digital on Wednesday of his decision. "Leader Jeffries and the Democrats have refused to sign onto either of those bipartisan solutions. And so at this point, our leadership is not calling up a bill to extend the [Obamacare] tax credits."

He called for a vote on the Democrat-led solution as well as two bipartisan bills offering one and two-year extensions, respectively, with reforms.

It comes despite Johnson warning Republicans earlier on Wednesday not to support Jeffries' petition, arguing it was not the best way to legislate. Johnson told CNBC's "Squawk Box" that it was effectively "doing an end-run around the majority party, the speaker or the regular process is not the best way to make law."

The House is expected to vote on a bill that Republicans say is aimed at lowering healthcare costs for all Americans, without extending the subsidies — which they argue are part of a deeply flawed public healthcare system.

Interesting...three from PA and one from NY. If I were the FBI, IRS, or DOJ, I’d take a deep dive on the financials of these four.

They are from districts the Democrats could easily win in 2026.

They have to know that this won’t save them next year and may actually make the bloodbath worse. Right? Right?

This definitely makes no sense. Why would they line up under Hakeem Jeffries? Seems to me they are mistakenly working under the wrong banner; Democrats haven’t had any good workable ideas for some time now...or if they have any ideas, then who knows about them? Obamacare should have disappeared along with Obama himself.

For low income people is there an alternative to Obama-care?.

I guess zilch zero is an alternative.

As long as you have Obamacare, you will need to subsidize it. It’s the nature of the program.

If you take away the subsidies then the ordinary people who rely on it will either lose their coverage, or go bankrupt trying to keep it.

This is all on John McCain.

I know this is unpopular views for this place, but time is needed to allow the private market to create policies that are unburdened by Obamacare requirements and that can take at least a year.

I have many clients that will not be able to afford their insurance without this being extended. They are facing premiums of $30k per year with having to cover another 8-10k out of pocket.

I also have many high net worth clients who are keeping their income low enough to qualify when they could otherwise afford it.

I can see a half way subsidy that could ease the transistion while giving the private market time to meet a policy that doesn’t have Obama requirements.

My son who is self employed was paying $900 a month for Obamacare coverage. Without the subsidies his new estimate for next year is going to be $2500 a month.

He’s a solid Trump supporter, but he can’t afford to insure his family if the subsidies are not extended. The Republicans are going to lose big next November if this isn’t resolved in the next week.

Literally, the Dems have the Republicans by the balls on this one.

That was the plan from the beginning.

You can thank John McCain for this.

These four represent swing districts, and I believe Biden beat Trump in at least three of them.

“MODERATES”

Do you think they would call Democrats leaving their party to vote for the other side moderates?

They would imply that they’re looking for money, a deal, a sweetheart deal, or or personal gain

Your son should join one of those religious cost-sharing groups. I was paying about $220 for single coverage in one of them when I started my business and was not even eligible for a standard insurance plan until the open enrollment period began.

These four representatives do caucus with the GOP, giving them all the committee chairmanships and control of the agenda. If the Democrats took the House, then they would control the committees and the agenda.

In politics, you need a broad coalition to have control. You don’t have to like everyone who votes with you.

There are plenty of options beyond extending the stupid ACA subsidies for people in that position, too.

The best idea is to allow individuals/families to join group plans through third parties that pool small business owners and would be able to offer insurance that would be priced comparably to company plans.

“...This is all on John McCain...”

Yep. Fully agree.
The one chance to put the wooden spike into the heart of Obamacare for good, and this vile SOB held the deciding vote and votes “NO” and did it out of sheer spite.
He really cost this country a lot over his so-called “career”.
He was not a hero, but a loser. He didn’t even make a good RINO. He was no “maverick”, but a no-good RAT dressed up in GOP clothing...traitor? More than likely.
They say “not to speak ill of the dead”, but it says nothing about speaking the truth....good riddance to bad rubbish.
Thanks for nothing, McCain.
