In California, it’s almost expected for people to appear younger than they are. But what about your car?
According to Carfax, the number of vehicles on the road with rolled-back odometers is rising, up 14% from last year.
“It’s especially concerning because, if we compare the year-over-year rate, it’s dramatically higher than years prior,” Em Nguyen of Carfax told KTLA’s Chip Yost.
And of the about 2.45 million cars with rolled-back odometers on the road, the largest percentage of them — nearly 22% — are in California, with the Golden State’s 532,200 cars far outpacing second-place Texas and third-place Florida with 333,900 and 109,000 vehicles, respectively.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “estimates that more than 450,000 vehicles are sold each year with false odometer readings,” and if you buy one of those tampered-with vehicles, it could cost you.
“Consumers lose an average of $3,300 in value from unknowingly buying a car with a rolled-back odometer, and that doesn’t include unexpected maintenance costs,” Carfax explained.

Impossible! That’s illegal!
Buy new....brought to you by the new car dealers association!
Back in the 1930s, my father’s first job was at a car dealership in California. One of his duties was to roll back the odometer on used cars.
I am not even sure, ho this can be done?
Old mechanical odometers were pretty easily rolled back. But the new electronics! O have no idea?
I’m sure hackers or tech people have figured out what to do. Criminals can be quite clever at times.
I finally figured out how to check engine hours on the Ford trucks. That helps a lot.
Computers are even easier to hack and faster.
Ok, it you say so. I do not want to know.
Like prostitution which goes back to when women were invented. The scam as old as recording miles.
I wonder how accurate these stats are.
I would assume that is only on vehicles carfax has info on.
I know none of my cars have had anything reported to carfax since I have owned them.
I could easily roll back the odometers on 2 of my cars if I wanted to, but I am never going to sell them.
never going to sell my other car either, but I have no idea what I would have to do in order to roll it back, probably have to desolder the ram and use a dediprog or something.
who is flashing all these cars?
For that kind of massive fraud there has to be a whole industry dedicated to it. I wonder if they all flash voting machines on the side ?
I asked some AI bots if there was any news articles about anyone in California getting charged with doing this but I came up with a big Zero
The only thing I found was a legal firm who claims to be “The Law Firm That Keeps California Car Dealers Honest” and then they tout a news story about a dealer in Florida that was busted for doing this, but not by them.
Obviously the CHIPs does not care or they would have a task force to take care of it. In fact I bet that Officer Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello could crack the case in about an hour./
Many years ago, this was common practice by some used car dealers. Somewhere along there was supposedly a change in production on car odometers & it was said they couldn’t be reset without damaging them. Now, with electronics, I don’t know. Is CARFAX any help in the deceptive practice?
What about the women?
If odometers are being set back, maybe the thing to do is to get the seller to guarantee accurate mileage or...tell him No Sale!
Shocked! Shocked I say!...................
Unless you change your own oil and do your own maintenance your car details do get sold to Carfax. And probably during the annual inspection if your state has it as well.
Years’n years ago we were taught to check the wear on the the brake pedal rubber for an indication of mileage.
I suspect they are buying the data from car dealerships, maintenance shops and annual car inspections. So they track your vin and the details provided after each shop visit.
Then it gets sold and magically the odometer has less miles. I mean that’s how I’d run carfax if I owned it. And clearly they are plugged into these shops as they get repair records.
Bought a Tacoma last year. Carfax gave me all the service records since it was brand new. I was kinda floored.
