The article answered itself. An artificial shortage to induce technological change.

Is integrated storage an improvement on RAM?

Simplified ... the dummies edition. Why your computer and laptop RAM is soaring in price.

There 3 major RAM manufacturers. They can make much more money/profits manufacturing the complex RAM that AI data centers are gobbling up.

And Micron/Crucial just announced they are dropping out of making consumers and retail level RAM. All production from them will be devoted to AI data centers. So this leaves only two majors. Samsung and Hynix in South Korea.

You plan to buy a new HP or Dell laptop in 2026. You be paying more, due to soaring RAM prices.

AI policing, weeding, picking and mowing can’t be done in an AI data center.

I remember a time when 64K of RAM would cost $2,000.

When I went to high school, computers used small magnetic rings for memory.

I used to have one of those boards - Magnetic Ring or Core Memory. It was a work of art and totally covered in epoxy.

It was stolen from my desk back when I was an engineer at HP.

Earlier this year I bought RAM for $200. It’s now $700. Hopefully there’s room to increase production.

My first computer didn't have RAM. It had mag tapes and disk platters...

So, in a few years we’re going to have the equivalent of dumb terminals connected to a mainframe some where else?

It’ll be a “device” under our fingers connected to an AI Center through the Internet?

Well, that was likely with parity, at least. Still, a very real chance of bending a pin on installation. I came in at the early 80s, so it wasn't quite THAT expensive (unless you were buying for a boutique workstation like a Xerox 820). Was that core memory for $2,000?

Part of my job is refurbishing old PCs to be put back in service since my agency can only buy so many new ones a year.

They are basic small form factor Dell PCs.

I swap the old HDD for a SSD and up the RAM to 16 GB and they run great.

When the crisis extends to Obamaphones made in China, then it's real.

All we need is a new RAM equivalent, made from raw materials abundant in America. Too bad media BS is not recycable.

“They are basic small form factor Dell PCs.”

I bought one used on ebay last week. OptiPlex desktop SFF 5000 / i5-12500 / 32gb ram / The 32gb was crucial to me buying it. This way I do not have to buy any more ddr4.

But 16gb is good enough for most people. There are many Dell business class computers (OptiPlex) and desktop and (Latitude, Precision) laptops. They all can run Mint Linux if you prefer. Dell has been selling Linux computers for years. I turned one 150$ Latitude 5520 / 11th gen Intel/ 8gb RAM into a Chromebook.

I am considering having that done with an older HP desktop PC. And getting the OS upgraded to Win11 (cause I am lazy old and don’t care to invest in learning Linux) because some web connections don’t like the security level coming from a Win7 PC no matter what browser is running. But, I fear I will lose some apps on my PC a that are too old for Win11. What’s your thoughts?
