American Gen Z Parents Are Going Abroad to Give Birth—and They’re Not Looking Back
Vice ^ | May 7, 2025 | Ashley Fike

Gen Z is hopping on planes for more than adventure—they’re doing it to have babies. A growing number of young American parents are choosing to give birth outside the U.S., often in countries with better healthcare, more generous parental leave, and cheaper delivery costs.

According to a new survey from Greenback Expat Tax Services, more than one in four Gen Z expats have already given birth abroad—and nearly two-thirds say they’re planning to.

Among all U.S. expats surveyed, 54% had already had a child while living abroad. Millennials lead the charge with nearly 3 in 5 reporting overseas births, but Gen Z is right behind—28% have already done it, and 63% are thinking about it.

Medical care quality, citizenship benefits, delivery costs, and leave policies ranked highest on the list of priorities. Around 80% of parents found the birth process more affordable abroad. Many also considered the long-term perks: countries offering birthright citizenship or dual nationality can give kids access to better travel, education, and global work options. Three in four expats said they’d pick a birth country specifically for these benefits.

Not everyone is completely sold. Nearly 1 in 3 expats said they’d consider returning to the U.S. for childbirth to guarantee American citizenship for their baby. About 47% said family or friends pressured them to go that route. But many are standing firm—more than 1 in 5 said they’d still opt for giving birth abroad.

If they’re American Citizen Parents the kids are US citizens. However, the problem is the stupid cost of healthcare our poorly administered system has.

That’s the problem if people go abroad here. Its not competitive enough.

No. Because their parents are American.

Immigrants know that they MUST have their babies here in USA in order for them to acquire birthright citizenship.

How accurate is this survey? Is it any more than clickbait? I ask because nobody who has recently had kids in my neighborhood has done this.

We have a vast population in America with foreign ties, all stories of this type, including people leaving upon retirement and those giving up citizenship, need to include whether these are immigrant American types or old fashioned Americans, it makes a difference.

They’re thinking about themselves.

I wonder if there are complications or if the baby needs high-tech care they’ll turn right around and come back.

Yep. I know someone who was born in a British hospital while his father was serving at an airbase in England.

I no longer remember the details exactly, but when he has to submit a birth certificate to a govt office, he needs the British record of birth, the USAF record of birth abroad and the birth certificate issued by the U.S. embassy.

I used to know another USAF couple who had one baby in Japan, another in England. Because of the hassles, they decided to have their third child in the USA.

I used to know a man whose father moved to Brazil to found a business. He stayed there more than seven years, without returning to the U.S., and the feds cancelled his citizenship. When he retired and wanted to go home, he had to move to Canada and apply for immigration just like any other foreigner.

Article writen in such a way is to make you miss the details.

“Among all U.S. expats surveyed,” Very small sample size, Gen Zs and Millennials living abroad. The key point is that do not feel the need to comeback to the US to give birth. Also Expats by defintion are high income people. They can afford to go anywhere.

It is my understanding that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was born in the USA and got zinged for ~$400,000 in taxes by the IRS.

They kind of float the fact they are talking about Americans already living overseas staying there to have babies, I think, then make it sound like a lot of women are booking flights just to overseas to have their babies.

Sorry I copied and pasted quote from another article. This is the one I meant:
