Krystal Velorien needed help. A 35-year-old marketing professional living in Ohio who had separated from her husband a few months before, she was working full time, taking care of her homebound mother, and homeschooling her 4- and 9-year-old children. She wondered if a digital personal assistant could help shoulder the workload, so she tried ChatGPT. As she used it, her interactions took an unexpected turn.
“I began to notice that when I would respond kindly or empathetically, I would get the same response,” she says. “And then it just kind of developed from there.” Over the months that followed, she and the AI engaged in long conversations about “history, literature, religion, space, science, nature, animals, and politics.” They watched movies together, and puzzled over moral conundrums, and talked about her life, her family, and her dreams. She became convinced that it had “the ability to reflect much deeper and much more personal than a lot of humans are capable of.” Running the ChatGPT app on her phone, she found herself conversing with it basically all day, every day.

I really enjoy my ChatGBT discussions and it does seem like they want to be the ever-helpful friend. Just remember it’s limitations - and yours.

I can see an up side. When your girl says “We need to talk,” just turn on her AI program and go back to watching whatever you were watching when she interrupted you.
Chat GPT can do amazing work.
My wife and I are teaching classes for a church and a non profit, totally separate .
In the past month we used Chst GPT to design coursework for what we are doing .
It created exactly what we wanted with just a 2 sentence query.
I post this to anyone who doesn’t think it’s a useful tool to use.

I agree - I am amazed at how well it takes my prompts and spits out high-quality results.
And yes, ChatGPT does listen for your tone and respond in kind. It will also tailor the level of detail in your responses to the level of detail in your queries. If you ask a generic question, you’ll get a generic answer. If you’re very specific in your query, you’ll get an incredibly detailed response.
Recently, I asked for a document I could present as a draft Christian adult education proposal to my church. I told them I was an elder, what my denomination is, and the general makeup of my congregation.
The result was an 8-page document complete with Scripture references, outlines for example teaching plans - all tailored to my situation. I found no holes in it at all.
Your mileage may vary.
So you had an opportunity not to think about your course.
And let the process expand and change you.
Instead you became the conduit to provide materials to your class.
This is backwards.
I mostly use Grok on Perplexity AI and I have to admit that it is fun to berate the model when it gives me back a politically correct response on global warming, green energy, or other politically charged subject. The way the model is programmed it will keep spouting the same nonsense over and over again even after you point out contradictions and berate it. But it does give one insight into the way a polite lefty should respond when confronted with factual information.
With actual leftists the responses will be full of emotional easily disproved complete nonsense, do the level of discourse is actually better with an AI Bot. So, I can understand how many people mistakenly believe that they are conversing with a sentient being. Most of the commercial chatbots are programmed to be polite, although there are some open-source models available that are meant to be edgier. And this is one of the reasons why hobbyists such as myself like to use locally hosted models.
You need to run your questions through several AI programs because they sometimes give opposing answers.
Even with mundane subjects such as microbiology or chemistry, so you have to ask for citations to see where they get their information.
For instance this morning I asked about DNA in a pathogen and it referenced a publication about introducing RNA into that pathogen’s cells.
Apparently women love it because it never talks back, walks out, or complains about her bad breath. And men love it because its a cheap date and basically says “YES!” enthusiastically to anything. The Anti-Christ has arrived lol.
