Ethiopian Volcano Erupts for First Time in 12,000 Years
Breitbart ^ | November 25, 2025 | John Hayward

The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia, located about 500 miles from the capital city of Addis Ababa, erupted on Sunday for the first time in about 12,000 years.

The eruption was not too devastating as such events go, but it did release an enormous plume of ash, which rode the subtropical jet stream and quickly expanded to cover parts of Yemen, Oman, India, and Pakistan. Air India announced it canceled at least 11 flights on Tuesday due to concerns over the cloud.

“The affected altitude is between 8.5 kilometers (5.2 miles) and 15 kilometers above the sea level,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). “It will temporarily affect satellite functions and flight operations. But it is unlikely to affect weather conditions or air quality. It reached northern India last night and seems to be headed towards China.”

The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation advised pilots to be on the lookout for telltale signs of volcanic ash affecting their aircraft, including strange odors, visible smoke in the cabin, and “engine performance anomalies.”

Local officials in Ethiopia reported no casualties or damage from the eruption, but voiced concerns about how the ash cloud could affect local farmers and herders.

“While no human lives and livestock have been lost so far, many villages have been covered in ash and as a result their animals have little to eat,” said local administrator Mohammed Seid.

There is no such thing as a “Super” volcano.

Anyone who claims so doesnt know what they are talking about.

BTW buddy. That is what I personally learned first, by talking to USGS people when i vistited the Long Valley Caldera 3 or four years ago, and 2nd, after being informed of that by geologists people I know in that feild.

I once thought the same thing. They corrected me and i accepted it as a fact.

I guess I took the label ‘super’ as a descriptor of something
large, very big, etc. What does the expression, real or not,
‘super volcano’ mean?

I found the answer to my question at a USGS site.
Caldera seems to be the preferred term.
‘Semantics’ is incorrect but kinda gets the point across.
I worked with a volcanologist years ago but wouldn’t waste his time with a petty discussion. :}

The more proper term i have been told is “a volcano that has had a hyper eruption event in its history.”

I live on the very edge of such a historical geological event.

The Silver Creek event over 18 million years ago. They figure that eruption was a ONE DAY event and it ejected some 640 qubic KM of material...all in one day.

I started my interest in earnest in this when i got interested in the mid contental rift that happened millions of years ago. The volcanism associated with that when on for ages...yet that isnt considered a “super Volcano” at the least.

My correction happened when talking to the USGS technicians at the Long Valley Caldera. I mentioned the term super volcano and they corrected me.
I had asked if they knew of the study on the mid contental rift. They all heard of it but never really studied it. Why? Because there are so many volcanos worldwide it is impossible for any individual to know all of them. So they focus on a few and study those.

Paleogeology is a very vast feild. Volcanic activity is but one part.

Who, what, when, where, why and how.

Yup. The super term seems to have been taken to instill fear.

A volcano doesnt have to have a huge event to become disastrous.

Take Campi Flegrei for example. Its not the size, its the event. Even a small eruption there would be disastrous.

Look at Laki in Iceland. Late 1700s and killed millions worldwide.

Volcanos=cant hardly live with them. Cant live without them.

I think the Northern Hawaiian chain would be considerd extinct volcanos. It is the source hot spot underneath that forms the volcanos that is continuously active.
