Quaint mountain town famous for its apple pies is overrun with tourists and long lines after influencers crowed about it on social media

A historic gold-mining town has turned into a crowded hotspot - with locals warning that the once-peaceful retreat had been transformed by TikTok and Instagram.

Julian, a rustic town tucked in the Cuyamaca Mountains about an hour east of San Diego, with a population of roughly 1,500, had long been celebrated for its iconic apple pies and historic streets lined with specialty shops.

But, in recent years, the influx of tourists has skyrocketed, leaving residents and visitors grappling with traffic jams, packed restaurants and hours-long waits on weekends.

David Lewis, who grew up in Julian and now works at the Julian Pioneer Museum, said the surge was unlike anything he had seen before.

'It's on steroids. It's kind of nuts up here,' he told NBC San Diego.

Julian's Main Street, once a quiet mountain escape, became packed with visitors lining up for pies and photo ops.

Locals said social media partly fueled the boom.

'It's been blowing up all over TikTok and Instagram,' Karina Chaire added.

I missed that episode. Simpson’s had some very funny stuff. South Park, On the other hand, I find just plain stupid. When they came out with Mr. Hankey That was it for me.

Guaranty they were not growing apples. I had a hippie friend who joined them on some commune for about 3 months. That’s all he could take of their nonsense and hypocrisy, only reason they let him join was his knowledge of growing kick ass weed.

It was one of the earlier seasons. We’ve pretty much quit watching The Simpsons because it just stopped being funny a few years back. South Park is rapidly going the same way. Both shows are getting a preachy, mean-spirited tone that isn’t amusing.

We record the shows, then usually watch part of any given episode and delete it.

I like the butter ratio. Always a good start.

My sister, GRHS, used to say that every good recipe began . . . melt a stick of butter in a sauce pan . . . . “

That is the problem with "social media". They find something special, and ruin it.

Apparently you need a better pie recipe. :)

Oh and a thumbs up on the farmers market ON THE WEEKENDS.

Our local one has been complaining about how no one is there when it is open which is Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 3pm. Which is when most adults are at work.

Why are people not there? It is a puzzle.

That pie looks great. The plastic fork kind of ruins it though.

I always wonder how many of them Yogi actually said. Kind of like all the things attributed to Mark Twain, or Ben Franklin.

Be careful what you wish for...I live in what used to be a little farming town...it is now one of, if not the top liberal county in Oregon.

Don’t worry, it’ll end in a few months when the “influencers” find another shiny toy.

We lived in Mira Mesa for 12 years (1982-'94). Julian was always like this in the fall, this is nothing new. And, when they got snow, it went turbo. Traffic backed up to Ramona.

The good news is the route to Julian took you by Dudley's Bakery. That was worth the trip alone. apple pies and cornpone bread...Yum!!.
