I think that was a support beam they jackhammered instead of an ornamental one.

More likely an arch collapsed. I've been in old buildings where they add steel to support a vault, or if it can't be safely reinforced, they just add more masonry under the arch as a buttress. The latter is as pretty as the original, but safer. Someone miscalculated the state of the architecture.

From the comments underneath the video:

“At least three workers were pulled from the rubble, one with a severe head injury. A fourth worker, critically injured, passed away after being rescued 11 hours after the collapse. RIP, Octay Stroici”.

They say Medieval but I wish they’d say what year.

The original structure was built in the 9th c out of a structure built during the Roman Empire. There were other building phases. The first earthquake damage that caused it to be yellow-taped (as it were) was in the 14th c. It was restored a few hundred years later, then damaged and repaired at least once more in the 17th c. I was used quite a bit during the 20th and early 21st century.

"The original structure was built in the 9th c...."

Late enough that the Romans had lost the secret of pozzolana concrete.

Plus, before it fell down, it was architecturally incorrect.
