President Donald Trump’s administration intensified efforts on Wednesday to combat rising beef prices, calling on domestic cattle ranchers to lower prices for consumers while also releasing a multi-agency strategy to restock the nation’s depleted cattle herd. Beef prices in the United States have eclipsed record levels after a prolonged drought that has impacted grazing lands and elevated feed expenses, forcing ranchers to reduce herd sizes. The U.S. cattle inventory, currently at its lowest since 1951, has been shrinking amid import restrictions, including the suspension of Mexican cattle shipments due to pest concerns and tariffs constraining Brazilian supplies, all while consumer demand remains strong.

Bring back Country of Origin Labeling for beef and pork.
That would help domestic producers.
Beef Prices are unreal.
The shortage started because of covid. Fuel, fertilizer, parts shortage, etc
Local custom beef farmer I know wrote a long article in the Indy Star in 2021 about it and said to expect this to be a problem for years.
It’s a long more than dry weather involved
... lot more

Yesterday I saw a 2 pack of decent looking boneless ribeyes...$35.....and that was at Walmart......When we go to Publix I don’t even look anymore. SMH
But today...I'm gonna make Chicken French...a big batch....so I can freeze some.
Mr. President, please allow the free market to operate. Ranchers’ costs have gone up and they have to receive prices that allow them to stay in business. The best cure for high prices is high prices. Herds will increase, demand will drop and before long prices will decrease. Works every time if allowed.
I vaguely remember eating beef.
Cattle numbers are at a 70 year low. A lot of small producers have just quit producing. There is a reason for that. Production costs have been at an all time high. Covid shut in production, bidet raised prices, we still burn grain for fuel, the processors (butchers) have a big hand in the price increase. The current market price is part of about $5 a lb for what you buy. Do you think you could maybe make it on $10.50 a lb for meat that cost you $5 for the raw material if you were a processor and grocer?
Trump can’t scold producers into lower prices. His Secretary of Agriculture is ignorant if she has not tried to explain this to him.
There is also nothing wrong with foreign beef. Sorry to have to tell the truth. Some of the very best beef I have eaten is from Brazil and Argentina.
It already is labeled for country of origin. I just bought steaks a week ago that are labeled from Mexico. Not as well marbled as the ones for twice the price but good fresh meat. Tenderize them and cook them right and they do just fine.
South West Virginia is a large producer of Angus cattle.
By my reckoning and observations, herds of angus are at the largest in my memory. Why, he wonders?
Agree 100%. There are kinds of costs farmers have which are new. The one I see is the inability to treats minor infections. Older antibiotics used to be OTC now they require a vet. Large animal vets are few and far between in many areas.
I just plain quit fertilizing it got so high. Have not pulled a buggy in 6 years now. The ground shows it too. It is a downward spiral and cuts into grazing capacity a lot. I pulled most cattle off and sold them. I won’t burn up my land I don’t need the money for that.
Last time I called Ted down at Coop to ask about fertilizer prices he first said, “Are you sittin’ down?” I quit after that. I still spray but not with Grazon, just not worth the money.
Trump cannot possibly be so breathtakingly stupid as to believe ranchers, or anybody else, decide the cost of beef in the grocery store.
Perfectly said and perfectly true.
Its annoying that Trump doesn’t understand the dynamics of the beef/cattle market but presumes to lecture ranchers about prices.
He needs to spend less time on foreign policy and more time on domestic issues.
Ranchers can’t lower the price, that doesn’t make sense.
It took this guy 6-7 years to build up his herd. Angus/Brahma
Beautiful beef, but pricey. Has his own processor and sells subscriptions. Weekly, monthly or bulk deliveries
