QUESTION: Hi Dr Zac, After eating fast food I often feel bloated, sluggish, and even a little nauseous. Recently, I’ve seen heaps of wellness influencers blaming seed oils like canola or soybean for inflammation, poor digestion, and overall “toxicity”. Is there actually any science behind this, or is it just another internet scapegoat? — Dani, 32, Albury NSW
ANSWER: Dear Dani, Thanks so much for questioning everything that you see on social media. Seed oils definitely are under the microscope at the moment but before you swear off canola oil let’s have a look at what the research really says. Spoiler, it’s more complicated than the real ingredients found in a cheeseburger or the dressing on your salad.
What exactly are seed oils, and why the backlash? Seed oils usually refer to those oils extracted from seeds such as canola, soybean, sunflower, corn or grape seed. These guys are high in polyunsaturated fats, particularly omega six fatty acids like linoleic acid.

Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun. If I was going to blame anything, it would be the special sauce.
Stop stuffing so much food down your pie hole just to "finish".
When you are no longer hungry, stop eating even if there are still a dozen fries left or a quarter of a burger.
Order smaller quantities of food. You will feel better and so will your wallet.
Why are See Oils now bad when the whole seed is OK?
So who should you believe when the evidence goes both ways? Some data suggest seed oils may be neutral or beneficial, while other studies advise caution depending on various factors.
So, most people pick the flavor of the day without thinking. Or...................they just read the headline.
I think it is the method of extraction which causes concern. Cold pressed oils seem to be safer than those which are extracted using solvents such as benzene.
Now and then, with time constraints, I’ll stop at a junkfood junction for a burger, fries, or sandwich. No soda, I have my standards!
But if I were 40 or more, no, I wouldn’t risk it. How hard is it to make a snack and tote it in a lunch box?
The headline is pretty much saying the opposite of what the article says.
Blaming “seed oils” is the latest fad on youtube. Gets clicks.
If your seed oils are cold pressed they are fine.
Maybe not optimal but fine.
It is like cold pressed virgin olive oil is the best for you, there are several grades below that until you get to Lampante oil which should not be eaten.
But it's olive oil! Yeah, and we use in soap or burn in lamps. We don't dip our bread in it.
“Why are See Oils now bad when the whole seed is OK?”
1. depends on the seed: for example, who eats cotton seeds?
2. the oil makes up only 30-50% of the seed, with the rest being protein, carbohydrate and fiber ... thus eating food made from whole seeds includes a substantial amount of nutrition besides just the oil ...
3. methods used to extract the oil can alter the oil in a deleterious fashion ... example: cold pressing vs hot pressing vs solvent extraction ...
“I’m a Doctor — This Popular Fast Food Ingredient Might Be Killing Us..”
I’m not a doctor and it might not be.
It’s because people order by the number. The number quantities are what the franchise needs to sell per person to break even/ make a profit.
If you have to eat fast food order the small burger and small fries.
I did that through thirty years of traveling where fast food was sometimes the only option. Reduce quantity of food and you will feel much better.
Those giant hamburgers? I have not had a “full size” hamburger since I was in my 20’s. It’s too much food.
We all die. Enjoy the ride..
I’m nearly 70 years old.
I eat what I like and the
Democrats can go Fu$k themselves
on the subject of food.
I was in the military over 5 years,
Regulation best for you but not
the best tasting.
My wife is a professional cook,
taught by people that emphasized
tasty, healthy non-VEGAN food,
although she can make Vegan if
requested.
Life can be very tough and a full belly
of food you like is far better than a full
belly of crap you did not like.
The Democrats WANT you to eat the terrible pseudofood. There donors sell it.
It is not that I do not like the fries, I do. Love them. But even the "kids meal" is too much food.
“The Democrats WANT you to eat the terrible pseudofood.”
I don’t.
I don’t care if Democrats each Shiite.
Their lives have NO meaning to me.
God may love them, but despite his command
I cannot.
Best I can do is let them be.
And it would be nice to hold their cubs.
But yeah, after that, do what you like.
