Cuts and bruises, maybe stitches, but death?
That’s a sad ending. It was somebody’s clumsy decision to leave the car door swinging wide open. I doubt that it was malicious, but that is one of the dangers of bike riding in traffic.
I’ve never heard of this actress before, but I don’t keep up with current German Media in any way.
I did, somewhat, during the Brexit vs EU Battle years, but not now.
Mein Mitgefuhl
(my sympathies)
Did you know this lady?
Bicycling is such a way of life in Europe, you’d think drivers would automatically be aware of this kind of danger.
Das Traumschiff was the German Love Boat.
Pure speculation here.
Cracked her head on the pavement after falling. Possibly no helmet ?
Well, upon reading this story, maybe a large number of people can avoid what may become known as the “Perdelwitz Effect”. It’s like running through a doorway not tall enough for your head. It could also be construed as jumping in a swimming pool with no water.
I'd expect bicycle riders to be aware; and, it is their responsibility to protect themselves with equal measure.
Why do they teach drivers to slow down really slow and toot the horn when passing by a stopped delivery truck? This is exactly the same situation, different types of vehicles.
Defensive bicycle riding is as important as defensive driving with an automobile. Any car door could be opened at any time. Keeping a good distance from such risks or passing at a low speed is only prudent.
Sad.
She’s an important person
She doesn’t have to operate her vehicle with care and caution like everybody else
Within the cycling community, this is called “getting doored.” It’s common enough that cyclist need always to be on the lookout for it. Mostly unintentional despite some egregious cases.
Most likely this woman suffered head injuries. (The falls I’ve had, I have always hit my head hard on the ground. Always had a helmet, though.)
Another singer, Nico (of the Velvet Underground and a solo career) (real name Christa Päffgen) was riding a bicycle on July 18, 1988, during a vacation with her young son Ari on the Spanish island of Ibiza. Nico fell off the bicycle in an accident and hit her head.
A passing taxi driver found her unconscious, but had difficulty getting her admitted to local hospitals. She was misdiagnosed as suffering from heat exposure. But she was later and X-rays later revealed a severe cerebral hemorrhage as the cause of death.
How many men in the Tour de France die each year? Heard of none, and if it has the cyclists are very aggressive and I would not be surprised, same goes for the female Tour de France.
Remember Joe Biden fell off his bicycle at maybe 1-2 mph.
If he had hit his head the doctors could say “Luckily he hit a place where there was nothing vital.”
Wow, it happened to Nico too! I hot married that very next month. Missed that story...was, um, peoccupied with other things.
Or the Duncan yo-yo effect popularized by isidora Duncan
Well, she paid with her life, for heaven’s sake!
Yes...if she wasn’t wearing a helmet, it’s quite possible for a head injury to be fatal.
