Why is cottage cheese suddenly so popular?

It's a pretty polarizing food: some love it, some not so much. Cottage cheese has been hard to find recently because sales are skyrocketing.

So why is cottage cheese suddenly so popular? Good Question. Gen Z holds the answer.

Cottage cheese has newfound fame and range thanks to TikTok, where foodies are sharing their favorite recipes featuring the ingredient.

It's clear this old classic has new life. Jill Holter at The Wedge in Minneapolis says they can barely keep it in stock.

"We are lucky when we have a full shelf like this. This is rare," Holter said. "Sales have been skyrocketing."

Cottage cheese sales are up 65% since 2021. Good Culture had to release a statement saying demand has been wild, and they are working around the clock to get supplies back in stock.

As a dietitian, Kylie Ryan at Hennepin Healthcare has been trying to get people to eat it for years.

"We have used cottage cheese as like a go-to thing for a while," Ryan said. "When people eat cottage cheese, they feel like it makes them feel more satisfied."

But there are aversions, and there are questions — like, is it healthy?

"What we like to say is that it's nutrient-dense," Ryan said. "The way it's made, it tends to have a little bit more of the casein protein in it."

For context, one serving of cottage cheese has at least 12 grams of protein. An egg has six.

Thanks to a new generation of awareness, what's old is cool again.

Cottage cheese is healthier than other cheeses because it has about 1.5 times more protein. It's also versatile, because it can go with sweet or salty foods.

Minnesota-based Kemps said sales are up 14% this year.

If you do not like the texture go for ricotta.

Mixes better and you don't have to blend it.

Definitely needs more words and more line breaks. I copied it out of my recipe website.

They’re like crepes. You make the stuffing. You pile up the crepes - thus fried. Then you fill the crepes with the filling and roll them into a tube. Put them in a lasagna pan with some milk and bake them.

I was in grammar school when Darlene’s mother served them on a visit and dreamed of them for years. Darlene was a member of our house parties and came to us for holidays from the midwest for years. Everyone brought their family recipes so we shared childhood memories. She brought these.

Nordica was a big brand when I was a kid in the 1970s. They had lots of local TV and radio spots touting the “Nordica Blitz Diet.” It was lettuce, Nordica cottage cheese and fruit. It outlasted the Ayds diet candy(?) my mother also tried…

Cottage cheese and mashed avocado, seasoned as guacamole. We call it poor man’s guac. But now the cottage cheese is as much or more than avocados. Eaten with tortilla chips. Yummy dip. I just had it yesterday.

Cottage cheese and fresh tomatoes!

Add cucumbers soaked in vinegar w/Onions, sugar, salt & pepper

My Dad used to make the best homemade cottage cheese and the warm curds & whey in the process

I love to slice bananas onto my cottage cheese or have it with applesauce as does my husband. When we were dating over 40 years ago, we found out we both like applesauce on top of our cottage cheese! We knew it had to be love!,,,

If you grew up in PA Dutch country, cottage cheese and apple butter was a staple. It’s been decades since I’ve had it though.

Body builders have extolled the benefits of Cottage Cheese for decades.

Arnold would eat a quart just before bed.

100gr of protein and a boatload of slowly metabolized casein. Nitrogen balance would remain elevated throughout the night...and he always tried for 10hours sleep.

He was a real grower.

None of us need that much.

“Cottage cheese has been hard to find recently because sales are skyrocketing.”

Our store shelves are stocked. Haven’t seen any sign of shortages.

Mom served it to me as a kid in the 50s, but she made it a lot more palatable by pouring maple syrup over it. I still remember the “Yum!” with that. Maybe I’ll have to try it again.

Yep, Aldi in central Iowa is frequently out of cottage cheese. At least here there is excellent CC from local Anderson-Ericson dairy.

Small curd only, with cracked black pepper. Or with pineapple chunks no salt or pepper.
