BUENA VISTA TWP, MI — A roving party in Buena Vista Township ended in gun violence over the weekend, leaving one man dead and three people wounded.
The party of 50 or more people began at the Liquor Basket, 3581 Dixie Highway, the night of Friday, Oct. 3, according to Buena Vista Township Police Detective Russ Pahssen. When the business closed at midnight, the revelers relocated to a park behind the Speedway gas station at 3357 E. Holland Road/M-46, Pahssen said.
Among the attendees was a 32-year-old Saginaw man, who had a 9mm handgun with an extended 30-round magazine jutting from his waistband, Pahssen said. Other attendees were perturbed by this, sparking an altercation, Pahssen said.
About 1:20 a.m., 38-year-old Buena Vista resident Qonte L. “Purp” Works grabbed the other man’s gun and began chasing him with it, Pahssen said. The younger man pulled a second, smaller 9mm pistol from his pocket and shot Works multiple times, Pahssen said.
The shooter called 911 to report shooting a man in self-defense. He gave dispatchers his name, requested police and paramedics, and said he would be at the scene when they arrived.
More than 2 minutes into the call, the caller was himself shot eight to 10 times by a male wielding a .40-caliber handgun, Pahssen said. Two sisters, ages 37 and 32, also suffered gunshot wounds. The older woman was shot in her calf, while her younger sister was shot in her abdomen.
Works died from his wounds. The three wounded people were taken from the scene to area hospitals. The woman shot in her calf has since been discharged, while her sister remains in critical condition, Pahssen said.
The man who shot Works has since been transferred to a Detroit-area hospital for additional treatment and his condition remains critical. Pahssen confirmed the man had a concealed pistol license and both 9mm pistols he had were legally registered to him.
Police have made no arrests.
Pahssen is actively seeking witnesses and video footage of the shooting. He is asking anyone with information to call him at 989-577-9583.
Works is the fourth homicide victim of the year in Buena Vista Township. Of the prior three, two resulted from gunfire while the third died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run.
About 24 hours after shooting in the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 5, police responded to reports of gunfire at a large gathering of teenagers in the parking lot of Saginaw Preparatory Academy, 5173 Lodge St. in Buena Vista Township. They arrived to find a 15-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder, Pahssen said.
Officers found numerous .22- and .40-caliber shell casings at the scene. Pahssen said it appears the attendees were firing guns into the air in celebratory fashion and the injured girl was struck when the lead projectiles inevitably returned to earth.
A combination of open and concealed carry can work well. I have done it often.
I do not recommend it without a holster, at a crowded, drunken party in the early morning hours.
“An armed society is a polite society.”
Usually.
Is it them again Yogi?
For some reason I have no doubt.
I think this was a scene from Better Call Saul. "If I need a gun, I'll use one of his."
Hard to be sure what did...and didn’t...happen here. But if it’s established that the dead guy was,in fact, acting in self defense then one must feel sorry for him.

Doesn’t sound like there were any physics majors in the crowd.....but even the average dumb-dumb knows what goes up must come down.
That's Buena Vista Township's version of a party.
If a party starts at a place called the liquor basket, it can’t end well.
Purp daid
“Qonte L. “Purp” Works”
