A toddler has died after suffering a medical emergency at the dentist ahead of a simple operation to cap his teeth.
Shardé Sherrill and David Mitchell took their son Er'mias, two, to Valleygate Dental Surgery Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, for treatment on July 17.
An ambulance transported the young boy to a nearby hospital roughly 40 minutes after the dental team took him in for the procedure, WXII reports.
Sherill and Mitchell allege they were not informed of any complications until he was already en route to the hospital without them.
The parents claim nurses told them the boy's lungs had collapsed, despite Er'mias having passed health checks at Valleygate that very morning.
Sherill and Mitchell drove 30 minutes to the hospital to find their son, but by the time they arrived it was too late to say goodbye.
They are now demanding accountability from Valleygate in Er'mias' death and what they said were 'unethical' actions taken by staff.
But Valleygate boss Virginia Jones appears to have dismissed their claims, stating in a letter obtained by WBTV that 'we do not yet know what caused Er'mias' tragedy' and adding that staff 'did everything they could'.

Lookin’ good in the coffin.
Like getting a face lift or an abortion to keep a figure.
My nephew needed his teeth cap at age two.
Family history of soft teeth combined with breastfeeding to sleep.
No many people with soft teeth
This is gangster bling, not medical necessity
Never heard of such a thing. My nephew is 10 and one of his teeth is a little bit crooked on the top the way its coming out and the dentist told him no biggie its going to come out anyway with your baby teeth..Ive NEVER heard of anyone capping a baby tooth its going to come out anyway
Yep, anesthesia.

DENTIST, n. A prestidigitator who, putting metal into your mouth, pulls coins out of your pocket.-Ambrose Bierce
In this case it wasn’t metal and the pocket was likely the dole, but the sentiment is the same.
The simple answer is these kids need to eat solid food.
One of my sisters thought it was good idea to always give her first son Kool-Aid in his bottles. When his teeth came in, they were completely rotten and had to be capped.
She didn’t make that mistake on her next son
It might be common, but it ain’t normal.
I looked it up and apparently it’s no uncommon but the reason is right back on the parents that let the teeth get that way to begin with... asinine.
[[Yes. Who caps baby teeth?]]
welfare parents who don’t have to pay
General anesthesia is no joke. Capping the rotten teeth may be simple but the anesthesia required is not. These procedures on very young children should be done in a hospital setting where help is immediately available. Losing the airway and being unable to ventilate child is the stuff of nightmares.
We had to get one of our youngest son’s baby teeth capped.
we lived in Hawaii at the time where the water was not flouridated.
We had given him vitamins with flouride from birth but he got cavities anyway because we allowed him to have a milk bottle at bedtime.
He was only around 2 years old at the time, but I don’t think the pedodontist used anesthetic, he only restrained him with a sheet.
There was quite a bit of commotion and protest but we waited in the outer office and let the professionals handle it.
They put a stainless steel cap on one front tooth and a little filling in another.
He was a very headstrong and adventurous toddler, but after that experience we finally got him to give up the bottle by telling him that the “tooth doctor” said so.
He had great respect for the tooth doctor.
I wasn’t put under with anesthesia, just enough to numb.
I have just been through hell with a dentist. He did a filling a couple months ago and I had a full body tremor for an hour. Horrible!
I blamed myself and was so embarrassed. I have essential tremors and PTSD and blamed that.
I went in for another and it happened again. I knew it wasn’t me and demanded to know what he was using for anesthetic.
It has adrenaline in it. I kept telling him I only weigh 86 lbs.
It’s a miracle that I didn’t die!
No one cares about patients!
Adorable little boy. May he Rest in Peace.
Parents and dentist should be arrested for murder.
[Yes. Who caps baby teeth?]
Our 2-3 daughter had a small cavity between her front teeth. The pediatric dentist wanted to cap them. She really started pressuring us with worse case scenarios and it started to seem she was threatening to report us. We changed dentist and the next one mentioned fixing the tooth but then agreed it would be falling out soon anyway. I can see parents going along with what ever the “professional” was selling.
Probably because they were so rotted he was in pain, couldn’t eat properly. At two, it will be another 4 years before is adult teeth start coming in and they are in danger of coming in rotted if the rot in the baby teeth isn’t stopped.
My first thought was that it was likely an anesthesia problem.
Perhaps the wrong mixture for the nitrous? generally a 50/50 mix is standard... they may have administered pure nitrous by accident.
When I was in school we used to fill big balloons with a 50/50 mix.. a stupid thing but fun at parties... the key is to never be crazy enough to use pure nitrous.
In olden days they used to generate nitrous by heating ammonium nitrate(very risky) and collecting the gas.
