Trump’s H1B Policy Hits Indian Students Hard
Deccan Chronicle ^ | 9/26/2025 | Prathyush Nallella

Several Indian students who secured job offers in the United States have seen their offers withdrawn after US President Donald Trump announced the $1,00,000 H-1B visa policy. Under the new rule, US employers who are looking to sponsor H-1B visas should pay a one-time fee of $1,00,000, which many companies now cite as a reason to back out.

Thousands of students, who are currently on F-1 visas, wanted to bag a job in the United States and obtain an H-1B visa. But with the new rules and skyhigh price on the visa, the companies are reluctant to pay the amount, and are rescinding the offers they made to students.

Speaking with Deccan Chronicle, R.P. Sowmya, a Hyderabad-origin student who is set to complete her Masters in Science from a university in Georgia, said “I applied to multiple companies, and was looking to work full-time with the company which sponsored my H-1B. After multiple back and forths, a company accepted and sent an offer letter.”

“But the $1,00,000 fee news got out, and everything came to a halt. For three days, there was no communication from them. Subsequently, they sent an email saying that they are cancelling the offer. When I inquired, they said they cannot pay the heavy fee for my H-1B visa, and said they have no other option but to cancel my offer”, she said.

People here were grousing last week about Trump backsliding on this issue. It looks like he didn’t but solved the issue in an unexpected way. This solves the issue while leaving the program in place

This is the case for the Indian student energy engineer that works for me. Not cool. You invest time and resources to find someone qualified, they move to Florida for you,and now have no hope of transferring from F1 to H1B. It is a cruel joke for both employers and employees.

This is so sad; but, maybe they can still get an interest free loan and buy a Quickie Mart or a Motel Chain.

We need to employ our domestic engineers first.

Oh my goodness! You mean those companies are going to have to hire Americans and pay American wages in America?

What a disaster!

If you think companies will just outsource to India now, I've got news for ya. Its not going to happen except for a few small exceptions. US companies already did go for outsourcing to India bigtime back in the 1990s. It was a disaster. The work they got was really crappy. It was so bad in fact, that they brought those functions back to the US and started importing ever more cheap H1B Indians to the US where they would have direct oversight and control over them....they did this even though it was more expensive than having the work done in India because direct oversight and control was the only way they could ensure the work was done properly.

They're not going to outsource to India again. They'll just have to hire Americans and pay American wages for them in America. Yes, that will shave a percent or two off of their profit margins. Tough shit. That's the cost of doing business in the US which is 40% of the entire world's consumer market.

Well we'll just have to adjust to hiring/training Americans. That's the way it always should have been anyway. We NEVER should have allowed companies to rig the game against American workers by bringing in hordes of cheap foreign labor.

By all means reduce costly regulations, reduce taxes and get rid of Gaia worship so we can have low energy costs. But on the other hand, make it clear that companies need to hire Americans and pay American wages. And to "help" them make that decision, slap tariffs on foreign goods and nice hefty fees on foreign labor.

Do everything we can to reduce costs to business but at the same time, require them to hire Americans. That's what's best for the country.

Agreed.

And look at the visa restrictions going the other direction (expat Americans finding work in India). Much like India and other countries fussing about Trump implementing tariffs even though they’ve had tariff and import restrictions on us for years.

“‘Cruel joke’: How Indian H-1B dreams are crash-landing after Trump fee hike ... Thousands of young Indians have mapped their adult lives with the aim of moving to the US”

SWEET!

thousands of jobs suddenly opening to USA graduates with STEM degrees! ... thank you, President Trump!!!

[besides, India has always been heavily in the sphere of the Soviets, so no real friend of ours anyway]

Of course, I am in favor of this, but only wish the $100,000 fee was annual and not a one-time payment.

Is that what it's called when you displace an American worker?
