Apple has stopped signing iOS 18.6.2, which means that if you've upgraded to iOS 26, you're no longer able to downgrade to a version of iOS 18. Apple released iOS 26 a week ago.
When software is "signed," it means that it has passed a server-side verification check that Apple performs when a new version of iOS is downloaded on an iPhone. An update can't be installed unless it passes the verification check.
Unsigning software prevents Apple customers from installing outdated, less secure versions of iOS.
Apple isn't forcing users to install iOS 26, and there is an option to continue using iOS 18, but once a device has been upgraded to iOS 26, there's no going back.
Apple has also stopped signing iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6, so there's also no downgrade option available for iPads.
I upgraded my iPhone 12 and noticed apps were slower and were lagging. I also hated - like most users - the liquid glass feature. There's no way to turn that off, but you can reduce the transparency.
But - good news. I'm reading where Apple is furiously working on correcting the problems of iOS 26 and may be rolling out a new update this week.

Glad I sat this one out. Wasn’t impressed with the new features and didn’t have the 14 gb of space needed anyway. “Hard work pays off later. Procrastination pays off now.”
Strange, just last week I was prompted to update to OS 18.7 which I did. Why would Apple jump from 18.7 to 26, never seen them move a number up so high before.
They are trying to align with the year. even though it’s not 2026 yet.
A guy I know is a car salesman at a major dealership. He once told me to never buy the first year of a new car design.
I suppose that goes for the first version of a new iOS, too.
I have not seen anything about an iOS 26, and not even an 18.7. I am running 18.6.2, have seen no prompts.
Good news would be letting people keep going back to a system that works instead of making them wait for a fix to their “upgrade”.
I had 2-3 fairly significant projects I had procrastinated on, that went away because we moved 3-1/2 months ago, didn’t do the addition at the old place that was on the table. So yes, procrastination can pay off.
At least one of those projects is on the project list for this place. I’m not going anywhere, there’s just more immediate stuff in the way.
“iPhone 12”
I used a 12 for about five years. Last April, we switched from T-Mobile (which was unusable in our Silicon Valley town!) to Verizon and got MUCH better performance. I upgraded to a 16 Pro Max from the 12 when we switched carriers.
It’s an expensive leap, but worth it.
I have an old Mac that can’t handle the most recent versions of the OS. I was able to use OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) to run the most recent versions (this is officially unsupported by Apple). They can’t support Tahoe yet, I am still on Sequoia 15.7
This was a recent acquisition so I don’t have a lot of MacOS experience but so far it has worked pretty well.
No one does that anymore.
Every company tosses half baked garbage that no one really wants into live status and then fixes crap afterwards.
I have a 12.. I thought it was getting a bit laggy and clunky..
Is Apple starting to adopt Microsoft’s “Worst Practices” ?
What phone do you have? Maybe it's too old.
I have an iPhone 12. It has only been offered an update to 18.7.
It just works!
I have an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPad 9.
I was in a hurry to go out when I posted, so I didn’t have time to check. Now I see that both can be updated to 18.7, but nothing about 26.
I have updated my iPad to 18.7, no problems.
