India said on Saturday that the Trump administration’s move to increase U.S. H-1B visa fees to $100,000 per year was likely to have humanitarian consequences, warning of potential disruptions for families.
India was the largest beneficiary of the U.S. H-1B skilled worker visas last year, accounting for 71% of approved applications. Companies will now have to pay the new $100,000 per year fee, which is set to take effect from Saturday midnight. (0400 GMT on Sunday).
The move, announced on Friday, could further strain ties between India and the U.S., which hit their lowest point in decades after President Donald Trump last month doubled tariffs on imports from India to as much as 50%, partly due to New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.
"This measure is likely to have humanitarian consequences by way of the disruption caused for families. Government hopes that these disruptions can be addressed suitably by the U.S. authorities," Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India's Foreign Ministry, said in a statement.

So the $100,000 annual fee basically just levels the playing field between an H-1B immigrant and a recent U.S. graduate who has shelled out $300,000 on a college education.
What do you think the H1b program has done here in America as Americans were displaced by cheap foreign labor?
BTW, notice how much more upset India is with this than they were any proposed tariff.
What does that tell you?
Since when are foreign “families” and “unaccompanied toddlers” the problem of the American taxpayers? They belong to the U.N. drop them off over there.
We need to disrupt about 30 million more “families”.
I sure hope so
What families? The Smiths? The Johnsons? The Wilsons? Or will it disrupt people with names like Katamasdata? Or Kenkermath? Or Guanaguuva?
“It’s for the children” redux.
They should be happy that we allowed any of them to stay
Get your name on the donor board, mucus, or we’ll know you’re just a freep-loading troll, trying to kill Free Republic the best you can.
FOX News was your last big project on here.
Wha happen to Pokrovsk? Wha happen?
What Kupyansk doink?
Disrupt families? Just stay in India. Problem solved. It is not the respsonsibility of Americans to take care of famalies in other nations.
What?! American billionaire CEO’s will have to hire citizens instead of firing citizens and hiring cheap foreign labor!? Oh, the horror!
Between AI and the arrogant and ignorant HB1 Indians -
(they are really stubborn about their sloppy work and uselessness but boy howdy do tech companies love hiring them)
- American citizens can't even get an interview.
I voted for $100,000 fees to take a job from MY family.
This is great news. America first indeed. The person who commented that once an H1B gets into management only hires other H1B types or other Indians with different work authorization is spot on. Usually takes a very senior mgr to get involved to override stuff like this and you end up with large, but mediocre IT teams of Indian developers. I’ve met rockstar American developers but few to none H1Bs who can actually innovative something. Most of them are just paint by numbers developers who think unit testing is an unnecessary step in the process.
Pakistan is more important than India for regime change in Iran IMHO.
Is that Pak defense pact with the Saudis a knife meant for Iran’s back?
Trump will meet the Pak military chief for the second time this year later this week.
Now the loopholes of the L-1 and H-4 Visas need to be shut down.
