India said on Saturday that the Trump administration’s move to increase U.S. H-1B visa fees to $100,000 per year was likely to have humanitarian consequences, warning of potential disruptions for families.
India was the largest beneficiary of the U.S. H-1B skilled worker visas last year, accounting for 71% of approved applications. Companies will now have to pay the new $100,000 per year fee, which is set to take effect from Saturday midnight. (0400 GMT on Sunday).
The move, announced on Friday, could further strain ties between India and the U.S., which hit their lowest point in decades after President Donald Trump last month doubled tariffs on imports from India to as much as 50%, partly due to New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.
"This measure is likely to have humanitarian consequences by way of the disruption caused for families. Government hopes that these disruptions can be addressed suitably by the U.S. authorities," Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India's Foreign Ministry, said in a statement.

Yes, and it will restore jobs to many American families. Be glad you were able to cash in while you could.
Almost like the plan is provide room for Americans to experience The American Dream.
Maybe they should consider evolving and get rid of the caste system!
Yea. That’s kind of the point.
L
standard MSM crap narrative - “women and children hardest hit!”
“”Almost like the plan is provide room for Americans to experience The American Dream.””
Yeah... and almost like the plan is America-first, for a change.
Hey Trump! How dare you not let us dump our excess labor in your country and set up 5th column political groups in the USA! That's our right! We're angry!
The first thing they should do is cancel the H1B Visa program.
I’ve worked with some of these people, and made a damn fine living fixing code that they wrote.
And if they get into positions of management they only hire other H-1B holders
Look at H1-B fraud, Medicare/Medicaid/Food stamp fraud and see how disproportionate the number of Indian names is.
There's no legitimate reason for these people to be here.
Deportations also disrupt families. What’s their point?
Bully, marcus, bully!
Chase India right into the arms of Russia with your neocon tripe.
That reminds me of something I was made aware of a few months ago. You know the phrase, “we hold these truths to be self evident: That all men are created equal”.
Well, A Hindu would strongly disagree with that statement. It’s just one piece of evidence demonstrating that hour constitution is based on Judea-Christian values. Not Hindo, Muslim, or any other religion.
Excellent point!
Fetch me my clutching pearls
And so could India siding with Russia.
On September 19, 2025, former President Donald Trump signed a proclamation that imposes a $100,000 annual fee on H-1B visa applications. The measure, which the White House claims is intended to curb alleged abuse of the visa system, took effect on September 21, 2025. [1, 2, 3]
Details of the new H-1B fee
• Targeted visas: The new $100,000 fee is specifically for companies seeking to sponsor H-1B worker visas. For new visa applicants, this is an additional charge on top of existing fees, which traditionally totaled several thousand dollars.
• Annual payment: The fee is required annually, meaning an employer sponsoring an H-1B visa for the standard three-year term could pay up to $300,000 per worker. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that the details of the annual payment were still being finalized.
• Impact on applicants: The rule states that petitions for H-1B workers outside the U.S. will be restricted for 12 months unless the $100,000 payment is included. It is expected to severely impact skilled professionals from countries like India and China, who are the largest recipients of H-1B visas.
• Company reaction: Technology and consulting firms that rely heavily on the H-1B program, such as Amazon, Tata, Microsoft, and Infosys, were among the most impacted. Several companies, including Amazon and Cognizant, immediately advised employees on H-1B visas who were traveling abroad to return to the U.S. before the September 21 deadline. [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
Legal challenges and diplomatic response
• Legal challenges: The proclamation is expected to face legal challenges. Immigration experts and former officials from the Biden administration have questioned the policy’s legality, arguing that it is excessive and intended to ban entry rather than cover administrative costs.
• India’s response: The Indian government and industry bodies like Nasscom have expressed concern about the potential “humanitarian consequences” and disruption the fee could cause. Former Indian diplomat Amitabh Kant suggested that the move could inadvertently boost India’s own tech sector by pushing talent and investment to Indian cities. [3, 5, 9, 11, 12]
Rationale and surrounding context
• Stated reason: According to White House officials, the fee aims to ensure that companies hire only “very highly skilled” foreign workers and do not displace American workers at lower wages. They also noted that the fee is a response to perceived abuse of the H-1B system by outsourcing firms.
• Other measures: The proclamation is part of a broader shift in immigration policy, which also includes a new “gold card” visa program for high-net-worth individuals. [13, 14, 15, 16]
