Cause of death at age 89 unknown? How about age?

I remember an Twilight Zone episode where he played the Grim Reaper (death) and was trying to get an old woman out of her apartment to meet him.

He finally met the real Grim Reaper.

Redford was once up for the part of Ben in The Graduate (the role eventually played by Dustin Hoffman). The director, Mike Nichols, at the audition, instructed Redford to think of a time when he had been rejected by a girl when he was reading the part.

Redford couldn't draw on that experience, because it had never happened to him.

The cheerleaders from my old school are all in mourning. I admired the guy for how he had them wrapped around his finger from 3,000 miles away. RIP

Every woman in my high school graduation class is probably weeping now. I remember the Sting and my reaction to the ending. I was completely fooled. Redford seemed like a decent chap away from the camera.

Because of his good looks and popularity I think Redford never got the credit he deserved as an actor.

Big lefty but great actor.

I saw him first in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid in 1969, my HS graduation year.

Other favorites of his are The Natural & 3 Days of the Condor.

I remember an early role on The Untouchables where he played a guy starting up his own bootlegging operation. He tried to go into business with Frank Nitti, who tolerated him for a while. Elliot Ness told Nitti that Redford had his eye on his chair. It didn’t end well for Redford’s character.

The authors must be young’uns, to put that film in the title when he had so many other more successful and memorable roles.

I’ve noticed this when other actors/singers have died recently.

“founded the Sundance Institute to promote independent storytelling”

As i understand it, he created the Sundance film festival because he saw small time, independent filmmakers getting squeezed out of showing their films at other film festivals.

The slots for film festivals were/are limited. There are thousands of new films every year and film festivals dont have the time to exhibit all the films out there. Its limited to anywhere from a couple dozen to a couple hundred. And more often than not, those limited slots went to the productions put out by major film studios with a cast of famous actors and huge budgets.

But as the years passed, the sundance film festival has turned into an A-List event, one of those festivals that featured movies that are produced by powerful people in hollywood, big budgets, and name casts.

He and Jane Fonda were very good in Barefoot in the Park. It was very funny as you would expect of a Neil Simon play.

The Last Castle was a surprise and a decently made movie. Redford made a lot of watchable movies in his time.

I did not find him overtly obnoxious with his politics so didn’t care about that.

Condolences to the family. Rest in Peace.
