VIENNA, AUSTRIA — Neighbors of physicist Erwin Schrödinger agreed that his thought experiment about the indeterminate nature of their cat being alive was super interesting and all, but asked if he could please tell them where their cat is.

"I think Erwin is great, he's so smart and always telling us about the amazing experiments he's working on, but he asked to borrow our cat a while back and I'm a bit concerned what happened next," said neighbor Fritz Weinberger. "We'd really like to know where Herr Shnitzel-Muncher ended up."

Schrödinger reportedly asked to borrow the large tabby cat to conduct a few experiments in his garage, where he was also seen lugging in bottles of poison and radioactive material. "After locking the cat in the box ten days ago, I can no longer know if the cat is even alive or dead," explained Schrödinger. "What is fascinating is that if I were to look in the box, my looking could actually change what happens to the cat! Until I look, the cat could be here, there, alive, dead — who knows? Goodness, what's that smell coming from the garage?"

As of publishing time, the Weinberger family was also trying to get Immanuel Kant to return their lawn mower after the transcendentalist refused to acknowledge its material existence in his tool shed.

Don’t look now….

But not as bad as Hisenberg, who can tell you where he is, but not how fast he’s going.

You have to admit, some of the people who work you read and admire would be real pains to have next door.

Or how fast he’s going, but not where he is.

Clever home contractors have a similar saying they like to wheel out at estimate time about predicting cost, speed and/or quality.

Inside this box is my last contractor... is he dead or alive? Until you open the box he is both.

Now, when did you say you were going to have that roof finished?

Actually I have had good luck with roofing guys. No leaks, on time, not the color we had picked so we got $10,000 discount.

I can live with a deep red rather then brown roof for that price.

Does he mean his cat’s wave form or particle form?

It was a metal roof so it was pricy but we thought it was worth it. In another couple of decades we do not want to be worrying about the roof.

A few years ago I helped solve a missing cat mystery. The apartment dweller below me let his cat out to roam on a regular basis. Another renter in the building next to ours lured the cat with food and water. The cat owner left a message posted on my mailbox about a missing cat. A few days later I saw the cat in the window across the way. I let the owner know and he got the cat back in short order..
